Oh, shit, no A/C in superdome, I hadn't thought about it. M$NBC mentioned
it just now...can you even imagine how miserable that will be with
thousands of people inside with no air conditioning (and maybe no food or water either)? Good Lord, this could become an indescribably horrible cauldron of suffering. Somebody please tell me I'm being an idiot pessimist...

7. The Mayor said
That all utilities would be gone when the storm hits in the morning.
They will have nothing and it could be weeks or months before it is restored.
He strongly suggested people not use the superdome and get out. It is strictly a shelter of last resort.
No A/C with the heat we have had and no water or facilities for people to go to the bathroom, etc...for that long, coupled with lack of food...it is not going to end up good.

15. I am counting on other NG groups to go in and get those people out as
soon as the storm and waves abate.... If they have to, stick them in boats and send them to the nearest supertanker or airlift them out in choppers even if it takes 5 days straight to do it.

30. It wasn't because of lack of compassion
it was because of lack of feasibility.
All available science says if this is a direct hit at a category 5, everyone in it's path will be dead. They want everyone out of the city.
The Red Cross has said that there isn't ANY safe shelter in New Orleans.
Everything available is a shelter of last resort.
That really says it all.

40. Agreed
There comes a point you have to stop the PC bullshit and get to the point - if you stay - its on you. Not to mention, once the storm goes through there may be roads either blocked by downed trees or that are completely underwater making it impossible for them to look for anyone in any decent amount of time. Time to get out of dodge - if you aint got a ride, hop on top of someone's car thats on the way out. Leave damn it leave.

39. Thats the standing rule in hurricanes
some people, for some reason, refuse to leave their homes...thats the threat they get. They do the same thing here

Rescue workers cant go out in the storm anyawy.

For those that cant leave, they should make arrangements. But I think the SD is a mistake waiting to happen

Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 03:23 PM by DoYouEverWonder
It's one of the darkest, dreariest buildings I've ever been in. Just wait till the electricity goes out. It won't matter that the building doesn't have AC.

And wouldn't they have generators?

there will be emergency generators--but not enough current to run A/C, I supppose.

Even the astrodome had ac. It won't matter once the storm hits, the electric could be off, but if they had generators, they could run. That does not sound right, don't they have entertainment events at the SuperDome too?

11. I'm sure they enough generating cap'y for LIGHTS, but air conditioners
need "HUGH" amounts of power. To cool that thing would need many hundreds of kilowatts...I just don't believe they have that. They can cencel a football game but not a hurricane...

22. Thank you, that sounds about right
hopefully they have the generators because they have had to prepare for a scenario where a lot of people might be in the building when the power went out, so hopefully they are prepared.

I wish nothing but good thought for these folks, it is going to be a rough ride for the next few weeks. Worse than Shades of Andrew...

17. wind accelerates over airfoil of dome.. it will most likely come off with
185 mph winds, with the dome a tornado will be created in the center..circulating and recirculating debre.. with a 180+mph wind engine to keep it going.

this doesn't look good.. the emphasized the conditions at the dome would "disintegrate rapidly".. and the water will be up to and maybe into the 2nd story.

Apparently they are only gonna be able to hold 20-30k in that 'Dome, since ground level will be under water.

Forget any kind of amenities. Homeland Security just wants to keep people alive 'til the storm passes.

I think he said it would be a last resort thing. I remember when Georges (?) went through the the city opened the Dome and swore it never would again. The place was TRASHED. And a "friend" (she's a Repug) who lives there was saying everyone was pissed off because of what "those people" did. Get the picture?

36. Of Course
Of course the Superdome has a c.... That's where Muhammad Ali recaptured his heavyweight title from Leon Spinks in 1978.

People overestimate the power of generators. It would take a big generator to air condition the Superdome for an extended amount of time....

37. Having been to the Superdome
multiple times, it DOES HAVE A/C, but it requires electricity.

The generators are tasked for:

1) Emergency Medical Svcs -- this is the location that dialysis patients, oxygen patients, etc. went to first.

2) Lighting

3) Whatever else

38. Yes, that was my point, I failed to note "emergency" or "backup" gens.
If the city power grid goes down during a football game, they can just
cancel it and would need only enough power to keep the lights on and not worry about the air conditioning...people can just leave. Not like the present situation. Thanks.
