This hurricane will be the other show dropping that will send all those screaming, body-odored, idiot oil traders into a frenzy, driving the prices to $75 or more.

This nation is also at war. In wartime and in emergencies, there is no place for capitalist silliness. I don't care what the "analysts" or the econmists say. Freeze the damn gas prices. Any gas station that does not comply will be seized by the government.

I expect oil to hit $75/bbl tomorrow. Most people don't understand why Katrina will effect that. The storm is tearing through the offshore platforms that produce a significant fraction of the US's oil and gas. These have all been turned off, and the crew evacuated. Likely, some will be damaged. The Port of Southern Louisiana receives a lot of oil imported from abroad. No telling what it will be like once Katrina moves through.

The gas price should pay for the iraq war, and all the infrastructure and
social cost of cars, and by that, it should be a lot dearer than it is
at the moment.

Its time the costs were passed up the line to the customer, and then
maybe the legislator will have the power to stand up the motoring lobby.

What free markets, except a collusion amongst vice president and the
old energy lobby to bilk the treasury on the back of a war which their
arms-dealer buddies are fatly glubbing on the taxman's wallet.

Lets freeze the price of silence, and see where that gets us.

Free markets are not "free" unless they are loaded with all their
externalities, and as it stands, its central planning, and indeed, your
post makes a valid point, that in a central planning economy, the
decision to float up the oil price is just another version of
enron bilking of the public on the back of a bush crime.

Rather, christian churches should give out 1 gallon gas cans instead
of bibles and advise people to immolate themselves. That would cut
the demand for oil, and the christian right can save us again!

I know those inhabiting the government are "libertarian" in that they want to destroy government, but a line has to be drawn. Even their corporate buddies shall be hurt. And that's the sad thing; with corporations in power, they get hurt even more than we do. In the long run anyway.
