2. If there were
they'd be long gone by now. The Navy sends their boats out to sea well in advance of an approaching hurricane.

3. oh hell no, they ran at the 1st sign of this storm. these ships are no
match for a hurricane, even ones as big as our navy ships.

11. when i was stationed on a ship in Norfolk, VA it was standard
procedure to pull out to sea until the hurricane was over because the ship would do great damage to the pier by battering into it. Fortunately none of the hurricane scares I was involved ever amounted to much. I do believe I was there for the one that Pat Robertson notoriously prayed away (his organization is in the area). I guess I owe him.

6. Even aircraft carriers aren't a match for this sort of storm
My dad and other Navy Vets have stories about being on carriers during major storms with the waves crashing up on the flight deck . . .

As soon as a storm this size is threatened the ships head out to safer ports.

7. Yeah the Damage is Too Much
I was on a Ride with the USS La Salle last year before it was Decommished and we hit a storm in the Agean that tore some of the frame off. Just a couple of peices of steel ripped off the hull costed about 10,000 bucks to repair not to mention all the compartment damage sustained from pitching around so much.

I love riding storms though, it helps me loose weight :0

14. Cool!
Yes, the Great White Ghost was mothballed March of this year. I was on her last Med cruise out of Gaeta, Italy. The USS Mt. Whitney replaced her duties. I'm now stationed in Naples, (sh)Italy.

18. All the aircraft carriers AND nearly all the NAVY bases my
father was stationed on during his long career have been decommissioned or closed.

USS Roosevelt (Theodore)air craft carrier he was aboard this in North Atlantic when waves were washing over flight deck -- USS Ticonderoga -- NAS Barber's Point, NAS Alameda -- plus lots of east coast bases.

I believe Moffett Field - is still in open.

Damn I feel old -- I grew up on those Naval Air Bases.

During the Vietnam war several fleets were caught out in major typhoons -- and I've heard similar stories from sailors about the waves washing over the air craft carrier flight decks.

15. In 1969 I rode out a hurricane on the USS Albany. I remember waves
so high they were splashing the windows on the bridge.

10. That's why we dove our boat beneath the waves
:)

But, yeah, we'd take our submarine to sea as well. We would just get out to deep water and dive down to calm waters.

9. I know this is off topic (sorry)
but I love your picture

I sent a dollar bill to Hubert Humphrey for his signature once after reading his biography The Education of a Public Man. I had seen a clip on the news of Jerry Ford signing a dollar bill for somebody. HHH sent it back with the explanation that it was unlawful to sign US currency. It was probably his staff, but ...
