*Warning* ubiquitous hurricane rumour: body bags being sent
Just talked to my brother who made it from the north shore to somewhere in Alabama.

Rumour of the NG bringing in body bags. We had the same thing here during Frances, Charley, etc.

Lets hope with this wind slacking a bit and a shift easterly things will not reach epic disaster proportions

<crossing fingers>

1. That's not a rumor
One of the officials said that they were expecting casualties and had to prepare for them.

2. You don't want it to be like the Galvaston and Labor Day hurricanes
Where they had to pile the bodies and burn them.

3. It's quite possible
They just said on The Weather Channel that, FEMA did a computer model of this situation (Cat. 4 or 5 making a direct hit on N.O.) and they said that we could expect 30,000 to 40,000 Casualties.

Now, sometimes Casualties does NOT mean Dead, it means Dead and injured, but you never know.

4. Someone posted last night that NO ordered 10,000 body bags
It was unsourced.

5. They will also have many previously buried bodies floating down the street
Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 07:55 PM by ultraist
Sorry to sound morbid, but that happened here in NC after terrible flooding.

I went down east to volunteer after the floods and locals told me about the bodies, caskets, snakes galore, and other debris that was floating around before the water level dropped back down. The smell was horrific for weeks and I came down with a bad case of bacterial pneumonia from working there.

Dirty, unsanitary water makes for some very nasty conditions.

8. I remember seeing that on the news.
It was upsetting and awful, particularly to the families who knew their family cemetaries were affected.

Caskets floating down the streets. Terrible.

9. People were devasted. Many ended up with PTSD from that.
Very sad situation, as is this one in NO.

11. Most people
in NO get burried in walls, cause you can't really dig a deep hole without hitting water. We have this option here in Baton Rouge also.

6. Not a rumor
I heard them say today that if enough people do not evacuate, they may not have enough body bags! :(

7. My understanding was there's concern flooded cemetaries will
lead to floating bodies. Even if casualties are light (and I hope so, though I fear the worst) they may need the body bags to bag up the long-dead (or fragments thereof.)
