This is why I love being a liberal (and a DU'er)
When I logged onto Du the first thing I saw was this:

DUers! here's how we can help the folks in the Gulf Coast.

The storm hasn't even hit yet and we've already got mobilization to help out. I love it. Beautiful.

Meanwhile on Freerepublic the first thread is this:

Time to Pray
My fellow freepers let us all say a prayer tonight before we go to sleep and ask God to help our people in Louisiana and the Gulf cost that will be hit by Hurricance Katrina. Let us ask Him to lessen the fury of the hurricane because He is the only one who can do so. God save and bless Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and all of America.

Now, don't get me wrong, prayer for the people in NO is a fine thing if you believe it helps. But I'm sure those people would be helped more with food, shelter, clothes, etc. along with those prayers, And I am not saying that there a freepers who are adverse to donating to help these people out. But there is nothing on FR that directs people where to donate (at least I couldn't find it). On DU, it's right up front. I think that's great.

3. And when they say "our people" you can be sure that's just what they mean
They're prayers will likely not extend to the Democrats facing death tonight.

14. which part did you miss?
I added the quotations to 'our people' for emphasis, but in my mind's ear, I can hear those words pronounced in a way that the 'our people' know who is being prayed for. It was just an odd line in the message above I saw, and elaborated on.

probably to the Red Cross. Not much, mind you, but a $1 from all of us would go a long way. Thanks for posting this, and welcome to DU, where our hearts are as big as our butts.

10. Welcome to DU!
Thanks for noticing that liberals help the less fortunate with tangibles while the conservatives grudgingly fling off a few abstractions and think that'll slake their wilted consciences.

Oh, and if anyone reading this has gotten this far and HASN'T helped out, GET OUT OF THIS THREAD IMMEDIATELY AND DO SOMETHING.

11. I agree
Actions speak louder then words. As James tells us: faith without works is dead.

15. Perhaps they should read the Bible instead of thumping it...
Here's a quote from the Epistle of St. James:

James 2:15-17

"15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone."

Hmmmmm......

Praying that they are helped is one thing; actually helping is another thing altogether.

Taking care of one another: It's the Liberal thing to do.

all talk. I think the problem lies in their inability to feel real compassion for others. All they know is talking points and forumlas.

They sit in their mommies' basements and post pious prayers to make themselves feel noble while others make efforts that actually make a real difference.

Anyone praying for those morons who chose to ride the hurricane storm while remaining on a shrimp boat?

Another reason why marriages amoung relatives should be outlawed.

25. I was at the gym and heard that
it made me laugh.

I don't have cable, so don't get Faux at home. At the gym, I won't watch it, but I figured "how could they screw up hurricance coverage?"

Ha! The reporter then said "a lot of these people will be dead tomorrow". Very nice.

30. OMG. That was Shepherd Smith, wasn't it?
Did he really say "a lot of these people will be dead tomorrow?"

Good grief. That man is a narcissist extraordinaire, and perhaps right on over to sociopath. When he was in FL covering the 2000 election, he went after a woman who he thought stole "his" parking spot, and I think she was another reporter too. I'm trying to remember -- I think he hit her with his car. It was quite a to-do at the time.

28. Best way to help
Is through cash donations to the Red Cross.

They are trained and will be bringing in more trained people from across the country to help.

It is much harder to deal with donations of blankets and canned goods, etc. but with cash, they get people where they need to be, negotiate discount purchases for the goods they know they need, etc.

29. Well let's just cover all bases and say
it helps to have a little of both. If it were me I would take prayers and supplies and anything anybody wanted to give or do for me. Search the heart and it's intent to do a good thing....
