Extended hurricane season with warmer tropical waters coupled the melting of the polar ice caps spells disaster for coastal areas. I don't know if anybody saw the article, I think it was in National Geographic, but it basically stated that hurricane seasons have been getting progressively worse due to global warming. What is happening is that oceanic surface temperatures have been consistently warmer and that the hurricane seasons have been getting longer due to the climatic changes caused by global warming. Hurricanes "feed" off of warm tropical water which has been getting hotter and hotter for longer periods during the year. Add this to melting of the polar ice caps which has contributed to the rise in coastal waters and you have a recipe for climatic disaster. The earth is very angry. We done fucked it up now we are gonna pay.

6. Actually, it is yet unclear

that we can blame all this hurricane activity on global warming. It is safe to say that this, at least, is a sneak preview of things to come. Hurricane seasons seem to be cyclic, and we are about 11 years overdue for the "peak". But that, too, is educated guess work. My point is that we are in unknown territory ... and with recent revelations about the methane release from formerly frozen Siberian peat bogs, we can expect our journey into the unknown territory to accelerate.

High energy civilization as we know it is in jeopardy.

8. Not to poo-poo on anyones parade here but.

There are long standing records showing that there are active and inactive hurricane seasons. In fact, we are at the beginning of an active period now that could last for a decade or so. I really don't think that it is safe to say that this is 'the' fault of global warming. I am in no way saying that global warming isn't making the storms worse but the historical data, most from the last active period in the 60's, doesn't show any increases in numbers of hurricanes.

Don't get me wrong on this. I am also not saying that there isn't global warming because in my mind there is. I am just saying that this may or may not be the only reason for the increase. There are a number of studies that are being done on the subject as we speak. Many of which state that the actual number of storms will not increase but, and this is a very important 'but', the storms are actually increasing in intensity.

9. Warmer is right.

I was down in Galveston and I could barely go in the water - 89 degrees. It felt like being in a hot tub that smelled like dead fish. Algae blooms and dead fish all over the place.
