These bastards figured the death of 100k in as collateral damage
Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 02:39 AM by Horse with no Name
From the news article:
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050827/ap_on_re_us/tropical_weather

"Making matters worse, at least 100,000 people in the city lack the transportation to get out of town."

From the article I read earlier:

DANIEL ZWERDLING: And here's perhaps the most troubling question of all: if a huge hurricane does hit New Orleans, how many people will die?

JAY COMBE: I think of a terrible disaster. I think of 100,000, and that's just my guess. I think that there's a terrible lack of perception.

Tell me they didn't factor this in? Tell me it is a coincidence that these two numbers just happen to be 100,000?
These bastards knew these people could die and factored it in as acceptable collateral damage and did nothing to make provisions for them.

2. It would be less
The disaster estimates were for 40,000 to 60,000 dead in a direct hit on New Orleans with a Cat-5 storm and no prior evacuation.

However, close to 80% of the city has evacuated. That leaves the number of possible dead at 8,000 to 12,000. Most of that would be from flooding.

Remember, it's only a scenario number, for the worst-case scenario. In reality, people tend to do better than in simulations.

But I'm under no illusions and have no doubt about it -- this will be bad.

3. When 8-12k dead is the low-end estimate...
...you're looking at a major disaster. I have a bad, bad feeling about this storm.
