source for "If the American people really knew what we had done" quote
I found something closer to a source of it. This time, it attributes the quote to George H. W. Bush instead of Nancy Pelosi, and credits Sarah McClendon with scooping the quote.

Here is the webpage about book that says it cites the quote.

Here is the article citing it via hyperlink.

I found more material googling for the entire sentence as a phrase

1. Sarah McClendon...
...reported that quote from GHWB in her newsletter many years ago. I have found few references to the quote on the web, but that is my understanding. I might have a citation on my old computer, but it is not to her original document, which is not available on the web. It's to someone reporting on her reporting of it.

You might have some luck with Nexis if you can find access to it. I'll look on my old computer.

3. on Google search...........
....there are dozens of citations of her quote from GHWB. It's everywhere. I don't know how you would get a copy of the original article, which was December 1992, with Sarah dead for two years now.

I wonder if the Bush Library has copies of the text of interviews he gave journalists. That might be a back door.
