I am hearing some optimism in their voices that I haven't heard since this started.
I'm taking that as a sign that things may not be as bad.
Next update is supposed to be at 6 CST.
I'm holding out for a miracle..what can I say?

said it was moving slightly east since late last night. A short while ago he said the worst of it will be east of NO. They will still be seriously affected but it means that Western Mississippi will experience the most dangerous part of Katrina.

As he was reporting, the power went out and they cut to Mobile, but he was still able to broadcast.

Jessie St. Amant, Plaqueminas Parish E.O.C., in a lengthy live phone call segment, reports:

"As far as a worse-case scenario goes, it could have been worse."

He says that the front of the eye wall is passing over his parish. The anchors are speculating that this might not be nearly as bad a storm as predicted.

There's a bit of optimism in their voices, for what it's worth.

Chris Roberts, of Jefferson Parish Council, is now on the air via telephone, from a hospital in Jefferson Parish. He reports that a neighboring hospital has begun taking in water and that their hospital is increasingly busy. He reports sustained winds of near 65 mph at this time.

The anchors now say that Grand Isle may be spared the worst of the storm.

Much as I hated living in Mobile as a teenager, I don't wish this on them.

27. It's important to remember that even if

the eye of the hurricane does not pass directly over New Orleans, that the entire Gulf Coast area is heavily populated. Other areas might not end up with the massive flooding that such a storm could cause New Orleans, but they are still subject to storm surge and all the damaging effects of a hurricane - and New Orleans certainly isn't out of the woods either. Hurricanes are very unpredictable as they get close to land, and have been known to change course very suddenly, even go back out to sea and regain strength. Once had to apartment hunt in New Orleans during a week when a Category One hurricane wandered up and down the Louisiana coastline, dumping tons of rain. That was just an inconvenience - this storm is massive and powerful.

I can also say from thirty-odd years living in Louisiana that when hurricanes are coming, the news reporting tends to disintegrate in accuracy as people give their impressions of what's going on in those telephone interviews. There have been tragedies when news programs broadcast some non-expert calling on the phone, claiming that the eye had passed over their area already, and people took that as some kind of an all clear and went outside only to get cut to pieces by or impaled with flying debris. Those telephone interviews should be taken with a grain of salt.

I love New Orleans, I lived there a good portion of my life, and I have a relative there who has probably been unable to evacuate. I hope that it is spared the worst case scenarios that have been talked about, but if it is, it means that some other area is going to get a terrible blow from this storm. New Orleans isn't isolated in an unpopulated wilderness. This is going to be terrible, wherever the worst of the storm passes.
