CNN reporting one section of Super Dome Roof
beginning to peel away. There is a lot of banging and leaking. How many people inside? I have heard 20,000 and have heard 10,000. CNN also reporting power going out as well in the dome....

7. There is a big difference between sheet metal peeling back
and a steel superstructure collapsing.

8. Am I wrong to view a dome roof similar to a convertible roof? They
Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 08:22 AM by Pirate Smile
generally aren't as strong as a permanent roof.

Our convertible roofs always leaked.

I know that is probably very overly simplistic but is the general principal wrong? I'm not talking about the structure of the building, just the retractable roof.

Obviously I'm not an expert but this doesn't surprise me and it isn't the same as the structure of the building being damaged.

9. I would think so
But there's quite a world of difference between panels coming lose and enourmous steel and concrete super-structure collapsing.

Honestly, what are the point of these minute by minute updates on the state of the stadium?

13. It's dangerous to lose roof panels like that
They could unleash a few tons of water at once on whatever's underneath.

But I'm hopeful officials have planned for that scenario and have everybody in the safest places.

32. once it starts tearing, it forms a pretty big pocket
It happened to the Georgia Dome. It started tearing. Water collected in the pocket. Then it finished tearing, dumping a lot of water at once.

I don't know the situation at the Superdome right now. Just saying, those panels are huge and can hold a lot of water once they start to tear.

20. A gigantic dome made of steel is far safer than any...
wood framed building these people could possibly go to, even with a 3' X 5' part of the roof missing.

29. WDSU has just reported that the pumps in New Orleans
have gone down, and are not working - and cannot be fixed until the rain stops, which will not be for many, many hours.

Underground tunnels or rooms would become death traps as the water continues to fill the streets.

The sad thing is - those pumps are ancient, and any old timer in New Orleans knows they won't stand up to anything like this.

Even with the roof of the Superdome breached, being in there is probably safer than being on the streets right now. With 100 MPH winds, even small debris can be deadly.
