BushInc caught giving BILLIONS of SBA small biz dollars to Big Business
This is a great case to pursue, because too many small business owners vote Republican thanks to the media spun perception that GOP policies benefit them. That has to be one the GOPs biggest lies.

SBA Includes Awards to Fortune 1000 Firms in New Small Business Statistics, Says American Small Business League

PETALUMA, Calif., Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Small Business League reports that the Small Business Administration released the highly controversial 2004 federal small business contracting statistics on Thursday, August 25, 2005. The SBA is claiming $69.23 billion or 23.09 percent in federal contracts had been awarded to small businesses during fiscal year 2004.

The latest SBA small business statistics ignore the findings of seven separate government investigations and two private studies that have all concluded the SBA has dramatically overstated the government's true level of contracts with small businesses by reporting billions in awards to many of the largest firms in the country as small business awards.

A 2004 investigation by the SBA's own Office of Advocacy found the SBA had reported billions in awards to such firms as Hewlett-Packard, Northrop- Grumman, Titan Industries, Raytheon and Buhrmann, a Dutch firm with 18,000 employees, as small business awards. The report concluded "vendor deception" was one of the reasons for the dramatic abuses.

The SBA's own Office of Inspector General has released the results of three investigations in the past year that found the SBA has intentionally included awards to large businesses in their small business contracting statistics. Report 5-14 was prompted by a request from Senator John Kerry. It stated, "The SBA awarded four of the six high dollar procurements, reported as small business procurements, to large companies at the time of the procurements."

30. Small business owners are not just the owners of mom and pop shops
Small business owners are not just mom and pop stores with two employees and a small profit. While the legal standards vary from industry to industry, a small business in many cases can be up to 1,000 employees with a very large revenue and profit margin.

Bush likes to throw around the term, "small business owners" because many people think it applies mostly to middle class people, when in fact, it doesn't.

Yes, I'm always hearing about how much better Republican policies are for small business owners. This story is a good read.

In fact, corporate media gladly pushes GOP lies FOR THEM.

20. They, like the Bush administration, are desperate to stay
in power for a number of reasons. One is that if they lost control, their deeds would be found out and they would all go to jail.

32. I suspect the same. They KNOW they're complicit in the coverup so they
have to keep covering up in hope the public never understands the extent of their involvement.

10. This news is six months old to boot!
This came up in the SBA hearing on the SBA budget in Feb. The report is just now coming out (because it's the week before Labor Day and the authors probably want to bury it.)

Feb. 17th, 2005. Go check out this hearing that specifically addresses this problem. (That's what 6 months ago. And SBA just releases the doc Kerry asked for? Shit that 's awful.)

http://sbc.senate.gov/hearings/109hrgs.html

Go to this archived hearing and fast forward to time of about 50:00 minutes into it. Kerry just utterly and completely nailed Hector Barreto, SBA head on it's loan programs and how they are administered. Go listen to this and then we can come back and talk about this SBA stuff. (Nothing has changed in six months. The Bushies are still lying their asses off about the loans, claiming credit for stuff they were FORCED to do by Congress and so forth.)

This SBA stuff is small peanuts against the total US budget, but this is damned important stuff for the people involved. And the Bushies are intentionally taking the SBA money, funnelling it to their friends and then lying about it to the public. (And getting the Chamber of Commerce endorsements because of payola.) Feh!

Hasn't * repeatedly cut SBA funding in his proposed budgets? I'm pretty sure Kerry had some choice words about that.

BIG CORPORATIONS and their media arms are TELLING the American small businessmen that the GOP is better for their interests, and all the while pocketing the money that is supposed to be set used for aid to those small businesses.

16. This is an outrage - and potentially a public relations issue for the GOP
Thank you for reporting this - it needs publicity, it needs inclusion in talking points circulated to voters to educate them about who what the GOP REALLY supports despite all their lying promises. We certainly aren't surprised, but many of them still don't realize how they are being deceived and damaged.

Filed in my "GOP scandals and horrors" folder, in a new "GOP against small business" file.

Recommended. This needs wide publicity and should be in talking points to reach GOP voters.

LOL. I've had to create sub-folders:

"Florida thugs" file

"Ohio thugs" file

The amounts of files needed just to keep up with their scandels & criminal activity is mind-numbing.

22. Kicked - and I'm recommending this thread to readers of other threads.
For example in this one:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4498464
Thread title: NY Times op/ed on secret Bush plan: “DESTROYING THE NATIONAL PARKS”

It's not just the destruction, it's also explicitly allowing religious merchandise and forbidding any mention of evolution in literature. The secret draft plan would effectively sell off OUR national parks for political capital and make them vulnerable to state and local political agendas as well as commercial and religious interests.

These two threads are both among the issues that need to be included in talking points to voters as well as fought. We need to be collecting this evidence, organizing it, and publicizing it. We can't wait for the DNC to get around to these important tasks, if they ever do.

28. Couldn't hurt to send this to DNC, though. Sometimes they miss important
stories because the media won't put up ANYTHING like this story for reporting, let alone the discussion necessary for the public to see what's going on.
