Media calling people idiots for staying....Hello, I see you there!!
Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 10:01 AM by Roxy66
I am sick and tired of hearing all of these reporters saying: "See, we told you to get out" And there they are standing in the middle of the streets.....I really wouldnt want a reporter to get hurt, but they need to stop preaching to all of these people. PEOPLE ARE DYING

1. It's a very hard personal choice. Having had to make it 4 times
myself, I can attest to that. First time was in Miami when I was in a mobile home. It wasn't Andrew. Some friends call and told me to come over to their house. I did.

As for the three we had last year, we decided to stay. Glad we did. But we're not on the ocean. The shelters can't take everyone. And hurricanes like Frances - there was no where to go but Georgia. That storm was over most of the state.

People have the right to make their own decisions. It's a hard call because you don't know even where it's going until it's too late.

12. Living in Michigan I can't imagine ...
... but, one of my closest friends in the world moved to the West Palm area ~15 yrs. ago and she expresses the same sentiments that you do ... My guess is that we have no idea what we would do until we're in your shoes.

17. Not a hard choice in the least
I'm sorry to disagree, but after going through Charley, there's no way in hell I would ever stick around again given the slightest possibility of a major hurricane headed my way. If I had kids, I wouldn't have even stayed for Charley (though all projected paths put it quite outside our area-and was dead wrong). I am NOT a wealthy person. I'm no longer considered even in the "lower middle class" bracket-but I would barter every thing I own before putting my life at risk by "riding out" a category 3 or higher hurricane. Why put a greater stain on first responders if you have any opportunity to leave? I drove 1,200 miles to stay with family to get out of the way or Frances because if it was to be as bad as Charley, then I didn't want to be yet another person standing in line for ice when so many people there never had the same chance to get out in the first place. It simply seems terribly unfair to me.Yes, people do have the right to make their own decisions; but if one has the chance to leave and an evacuation is mandatory, then I think that that MUST be taken seriously. Evacuating is certainly a huge inconvenience, but saving one's own life and the lives of loved ones is worth it.

23. We evacuated but. . .
Hurricane Andrew hunted us down. We evacuated from the Keys to my parents house in Homestead. My husband helped my father shutter and prepare their house, my mother's rental home, and elderly woman's home, and his business partner's (who was in Maine) home.

During all this they made my parent's house and evacuation area so we planned to evacuate to my uncle's home in Cape Coral. Then he called and said not to come, they were about to declare his area an evacuation zone. We decided to drive to DeLand to my inlaws' home but by the time we were finished with the work, the roads heading north were jammed. No one had thought to lift the tolls!

We were in a well-prepared and stocked home and Andrew was expected to hit far north of us, but the eye went over our house. Everything was fine, though and I still believe we made the right decision. I'm big on evacuating, though.

24. How terrifying!
hurricanes are SO unpredictable. The weathermen always sound so certain of their projections, but often they're way off-and just how off can be deadly for those in the new path!

From now on, I'm heading out of state when the big ones even hint of coming this way. :scared:

5. I'm not saying they shouldnt be there at all...
It's the staging of the reports. These reporters out standing in the streets are idiots. Then when they get a call from a trapped person...they are so smug

15. And some of the folks that are staying are doing their job
I was listening to one fellow last night. Since so many tourists couldn't get out in time, they are staying in his hotel in the French Quarter, and thus the manager and many of his staff were staying also. In addition there are many civil and emergency employees who couldn't get away.

19. "blame the victim" ...typical fundie condemnation
Such compassion!

If someone did make a poor decision to stay, do they really deserve to be injured or killed? People are making these decisions in the heat of the moment, many of whom, lack resources.

Would they also say, well, those soldiers voluntarily signed up for the military, so they deserve to have their limbs blown off or be killed?

"We don't care."

10. You started a thread claiming the MSM were showing sympathy...
For the "idiots." Which version is true?

Until the storm passes through, this story & rumors of damage are all the media have to cover.

7. And they aren't even setting a good example
I remember times when tornadoes have passed through this area, and NOTHING makes me more upset (when it's passed and everyone is okay) to see people out and walking about, looking around, before the danger has passed. The trailing edge of a storm can be the worst part...and they've got their kids out walking around, around the buildings, over 100 feet from the door. Forgetting that, if a tornado is traveling at 60 mph, and it's coming right at you, it's about like a car on the highway, seen from a distance. How long until it gets there? It may take minutes, or only seconds, to be on you, and in that amount of time they'd have to get indoors and down to shelter, along with their kids and pets. Nope, not thinking at all.

That's how I feel about the reporters, telling the residents they're idiots. Nice shot guys; as if it matters either way, to the endangered and/or dying.

I'm sure that reporting on the obvious gets you far, in this day and age, where brains aren't worth much unless they're tuned to the lying frequency of the electromagnetic brain-wave spectrum...if there is one, and you know they don't know if that's junk science or not.

Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 10:19 AM by Xap
Maybe they just aren't showing it but nothing I've seen so far on TV looks any worse than a typcial high wind storm found anywhere on the great plains. Certainly nothing to match a tornado.

So much of what the media air is just hype and sensationalism I wonder if a lot of people don't pay much attention to them anymore.

18. What an absolute crock of shit. There have been people who wanted
to leave but couldn't for lack of money or transportation (or both). To say that anybody is an idiot, that takes a lot of guts coming from a profession who's lied and covered for the bush** administration. How would they be able to tell????

21. Exactly.
And even if they could get out and chose to stay, should we withdraw any compassion for those in harm's way?

I cannot believe some of the cruel, fundie like posts I've read here today. What a disappointment.

26. They certainly need compassion -
- but those who could have evacuated and chose not to will have to wait until the storm is over for any attempted rescue. Rescue personnel deserve a bit of compassion, too. Should they risk their life to save someone who had decided to ignore the warnings and then found themselves in a world of trouble?

As far as not being able to evacuate: Other than the ill or elderly, I have a hard time believing that there is anyone who doesn't have one friend/neighbor or volunteer group or other local organization that they could call on for a ride or for a loan of a few $$ to get gas and get out of town.

I think there is a good bit of "head-in-sand syndrome" thinking it will never happen to them and finding out too late that it already has.

28. Where did I say that rescue workers should go out and rescue them?
Uh, I didn't say that, did I? But they are sending our rescue workers to get some people, depending on the circumnstances. They are, trained rescue workers, are they not?

You may have a hard time believing that not everyone could get out, but there are countless reports of people not having enough money or not having vehicles to evacuate.

freeper reasoning. The only people who couldn't leave were the poor, elderly and handicapped. The whole bigotry laced with a heavy dose of racism of those remarks make me sick.
