Tim Dunn Announces Bid for U.S. Congress

Iraqi War Veteran Calls for More North Carolina Values, Less Washington Politics in Congress

(FAYETTEVILLE, NC) - Pledging to bring the values of North Carolina’s families to Congress, Iraqi war veteran Tim Dunn, a Democrat, announced Wednesday that he is running to represent North Carolina’s Eighth Congressional District in the United States Congress.

Dunn, an attorney and Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, returned from serving in Iraq in the past year, where he was part of the team who helped the Iraqi Special Tribunal prepare for the investigation and prosecution of Saddam Hussein and other senior leaders of the former Iraqi regime.

“I’m running because I care about the people of this district, and I’m concerned that the politicians in Washington don’t seem to care about the things that matter most to the people of North Carolina,” Dunn stated. “What Congress needs is more North Carolina values and less Washington politics.”

“I am troubled that we have failed to give the servicemen and women in Iraq the tools that they need to win and haven’t clearly defined our strategy for winning, and I am concerned that Congress has failed to keep its promises to our nation’s veterans.”

“I care deeply that thousands of North Carolina workers have lost their jobs due to bad trade agreements, and that thousands more jobs are threatened because our Congressman switched his vote on CAFTA. Robin Hayes’ broken promise is just another example of him putting Washington politics ahead of our families and our values.”

Dunn, a 19 year veteran of the Marine Corps has also served in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Kosovo. He and his wife Susan have been married for 26 years and reside in Fayetteville with their three children, Clark, John Patrick and Laura. An elder of the First Presbyterian Church, Dunn is also a former Sunday school teacher and youth sports coach.

4. I just got the press release via an email list I subscribe to.
I don't really know that much about the guy. I do know that Robin Hayes, the repub incumbent, stepped in it when he voted for CAFTA after saying he would not.

9. And declared emphatically that Saddam Hussein is directly
involved in 9/11 (this was a couple months ago). Thanks for posting this, can't wait to hear what Dunn is all about.

6. I am not the most knowledgeable poster on this board about
internal NC politics. But the word I have been getting is that Robin Hayes, the repub incumbent, is vulnerable. He voted yes on CAFTA after saying he would vote no.

11. He's vulnerable
Democrats are still the majority in the NC legislature an managed to include part of Charlotte in Hayes' district. Last time a 27 year old who worked on the west wing got 44% of the vote and was heavily outspent. I think we have a good chance.

26. I live in the 8th
The 8th is a gerrymandered district designed to put a Republican in the House. It runs from the east side of Charlotte at one end to the west side of Fayetteville at the other.

The politics here are fairly conservative--not as bad as the 9th, which keeps sending Sue Myrick (better known as the Congresswoman from Amway), but no one would ever mistake it for...oh, the Massachusetts 8th.

The Iraq veteran credential gives our side a good chance of taking the seat from Robin Hayes. That and the CAFTA vote. I even got a letter from this asshat explaining why he flip-flopped on the bill. Something about the idea that if we didn't have CAFTA, all the Latin American clothing manufacturers would just buy Chinese fabric, but now that we have CAFTA they'll all buy American fabric. Which, of course, makes the people in Kannapolis who used to work for Pillowtex (the largest industrial shutdown in the history of the state of North Carolina, and Kannapolis is in the 8th) real happy...

I feel jealous of y'all who don't have Robin Hayes as your Congressman.

31. Since gerrymandered for a Democrat
Believe it or not, the district was drawn by the Democratic general assembly in an effort to get a Democrat in there. The little nib of Mecklenburg that got pasted on to the district is very Democratic, giving Beth Troutman 65% of their votes in 2004. The 8th was previously represented by Democrat and former gospel singer Bill Hefner prior to Robin Hayes.

The district is drawn with a majority Democratic base, and the races have always been oh-so-close. The Republicans pour lots of money into this race, despite the fact that the Democrats have not yet come up with a strong enough candidate for the largely blue-collar district and the Democrat has never been well-funded or supported by the party leaders or the grassroots.

The district includes Kannapolis, home of the laid-off Pillowtex workers. And Robin Hayes signs on to CAFTA at the last minute after swearing that he would never vote for it. This is a seat to watch.

I am so glad to see Dem 'tough guys' running.

Paul Hackett was the first.

Eric Massa in upstate New York.

Andrew Duck is running against Roscoe Bartlett (R-Insane Motherfucker) in western Maryland.

I am told there are 7 other War in Iraq© vets running elsewhere, but I don't know where.

And now this guy.

We need more.

25. Got a personal email from Tim Dunn including a shout out for DU!
XXXXXX,

Thank you so much for your contribution to our campaign today! I am honored that you would invest in my campaign at such an early stage. In fact, I believe you one of the first two contributions on our ActBlue site!

Thank you also for your posting on my behalf on the DemocraticUnderground. I'm attaching my resume in the event that you want to further share my background in the netroots.

I am confident that 2006 is going to be our year both here in North Carolina and nationwide. With your help, we can return the 8th district congressional seat to the people of North Carolina and take it from the big Washington special interests who have had it for so long.

Thank you again.

Tim Dunn
