Did anybody bother to tell this idiot

That we have a National Emergency in Progress! And that maybe he might have better things to do?

I mean I don't want to disrupt his busy schedule but a MAJOR HURRICANE has hit the Southern USA.

If Mr. Bush can not fulfill the duties of his office then he needs to be removed from office. This is exactly what he did on 9-11 and he's doing it again. It is called Dereliction of Duty and it is a serious crime. It's time for Bush to go.

7. I never understand this criticism
There are a million reasons to criticize this oaf. 1 - 1,567 on my list at the moment are the fact that it now costs $32.00 to fill up my Civic.

The fact that he is not sitting at home and watching the weather channel is 1,000,267.

I really have no idea what I would want a president to be doing during a national disaster. It should be the governor's job first. If it goes to the federal level, the head of FEMA and probably the Secretary of HHS should be involved.

If the president has to start monitoring the situation, I assume that we lost a city.

11. The President is supposed to lead the country
He is supposed to get on TV and comfort the nation. He is supposed to have the best resources for up to the minute information so that he can offer aide, guidance and assistance to all the states that have been hit.
The President can give orders for assistance that the governors can't give to themselves.

That is why it is a NATIONAL EMERGENCY. And that is why it is the job of the President of the United States to get off his ass and help lead us out of this disaster.

18. I don't need much comfort at the moment
I mean, it's a really big storm. But I've seen hurricanes before. I've been through three of them. They suck and they are scary but the nation shouldn't need comfort. And the people who need "comfort" don't have power to watch tv at the moment.

Frankly, if someone were to "comfort" me right now, I would think they were mentally ill. (The fact that I do think Bush is mentally ill is not relevant to this discussion).

As for up to the minute information, I assume that's why we have FEMA. Presidents who micromanage their agencies turn into Jimmy Carter.

My point is, 99 percent of the people on this board will criticize Bush for getting up in the morning. I find that a little whacky. There is so much out there that we shouldn't have to start inventing things.

30. F.Y.I. he already did that; he declared LA and MS a national disaster area
Which allows the Fed to send money, supplies and emergency workers to those areas. Here's a story about some of the things that the Fed is getting ready to do as soon as it's safe:

FEMA Prepares for Katrina's Aftermath
By Randolph E. Schmid, The Associated Press
Published: August 29, 2005

WASHINGTON—The Federal Emergency Management Agency went into disaster mode as it and other federal agencies prepared to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

As the Category 4 storm surged ashore just east of New Orleans on Monday, FEMA had medical teams, rescue squads and groups prepared to supply food and water poised in a semicircle around the city, its director, Michael Brown, said.

(snip)

In other storm-related moves:

_ The Coast Guard closed ports and waterways along the Gulf coast and evacuated its own personnel and equipment. More than 40 Coast Guard aircraft from units along the entire Eastern Seaboard, along with more than 30 small boats, patrol boats and cutters, were positioned around the area to be ready to conduct post-hurricane search and rescue operations and to do waterway damage checks and begin any needed repairs.

_ EPA said it has activated its response network and has personnel in at the FEMA center in Denton, Texas as well as near the scene at the state of Louisiana command center in Baton Rouge to help deal with any oil and chemical spills.

_ The Federal Aviation Administration said airports were closed in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, La.; Biloxi, Miss.; Mobile, Ala.; Pensacola, Fla. and at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. Airlines have moved their equipment away from the stricken areas and canceled all flights, FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown said. Many air traffic control facilities in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama are closed.

20. He could have done a lot more 24-36 hours ago than he could do now.
Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 03:02 PM by strategery blunder
He could have brought all NG units in that part of the country under his control for a centralized evacuation effort. He could have moved military transport capability to NOLA and used it to help evacuate the people who could not afford to evacuate themselves.

And, in the event that such an evacuation proved too much for the NG and other military units in the area, he could have ordered the Air Force to start mobilizing civilian aircraft, yes, including large jetliners capable of evacuating hundreds of people at a time, five to ten times in a day.

But it is too late now, and he has shown that he doesn't care to the entire nation.

Edit: The above post assumes bu$h* is competent to manage such an operation, and we all have our doubts.

26. Has anyone ever evacuated a city in that manner?
This "use the military to evacuate everyone" idea got started last year during the Florida hurricanes.

What no one ever considers is:

1. You can't force people to leave unless you point a gun at them;
2. Sometimes it's more dangerous to leave (note the three deaths related to the evacuation); and
3. It seems the odds of survival in these things seems pretty good to begin with.

I'm not sure that spending hundreds of billions of dollars to have the military take over the civilian airline industry and start marching people out of their homes at gun point is the best solution to a hurricane.

31. No, not at gunpoint.
Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 03:14 PM by strategery blunder
I'm talking about using the military to evacuate people who want to leave but can't afford the expenses involved, mainly those who do not have a car. If people want to stay, let them commit suicide.

Furthermore, the three evac deaths will pale compared to the final death toll in NOLA. Already reports are circulating on other threads about bodies floating in water.

Nor is this your typical hurricane...at the time that such an evacuation would have been taking place, Katrina was packing 175 mph winds.

You're right; it would be really expensive, and the mobilization of civilian planes should only be done in extreme circumstances. Considering the forecasts called for an überstorm of d00m, I would say Katrina would have qualified.

34. A couple years ago during a winter power outage, the Natl Guard showed up
At my parent's house, telling them that everybody had been ordered to the local HS gym because it was the only place with an emergency generator, and there was a blizzard blowing, and power was expected to for several days, maybe even a week.

My parents - - both highly educated, upper middle class people - -refused to go. They lit a fire in their fireplace for heat and cooking, used the outdoors as their refrigerator/freezer, and flushed the toilets once and hour to keep the pipes from freezing. They lived like that for four days. If the fire had gone out while they were asleep, they could have frozen to death.

Some of the people who stayed in the path of the storm did so of their own free will. Not all, probably not most, but some did.

CNN was interviewing a couple college students still at LSU this morning, and one said she stayed because she couldn't find a way to get to a safe place. The other one said he'd talked it over with his parents, and both he and HIS PARENTS told him that it sounded like it would be a fun thing for him to stay and see the storm first hand.

Some of the people in the path of the storm are their because they decided to stay.

16. The only place he should be
is on AF1 heading back to DC to over see the response to this MAJOR DISASTER. More water is coming down the Mississippi River and New Orleans is already flooded. We are talking a major catastrophe in progress. If Bush doesn't want to fulfill the duties of his office then he should retire and allow someone else to lead this country.

19. Ahh geez, he's doin' that overly friendly "shucks, I'm yer buddy, not
yer enemy" chuckle and poopeatin' grin he does when he knows he lying like a bad rug. I once read an article for a study of people who laugh alot even when there's nothing is funny. The study's authors came to a couple of conclusions:

1. Such laughter deflects anger when an inferior is in a position of presenting his/her superior with bad or unpleasant news,
2. Such laughter conveys that the person laughing is trying to telegraph that he/she is not a threat to someone.

I particularly loathe this creep when he engages in this.

<snip>
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - A potential crisis in the natural-gas markets was apparently averted Monday after the company operating the Henry Hub gas gathering facility said it avoided major damage from Hurricane Katrina and reopened the site for delivery and receipt.

Earlier, August deliveries had been halted under a force majeure declaration by the New York Mercantile Exchange, which was an unprecendented move.

Force majeure, which allows companies to depart from strict contract terms in times of natural disaster or political crisis, came into play before Hurricane Katrina began to roar through Louisiana, suspending contractual obligations and regular business operations. In preparation for the storm, Sabine Pipeline, which operates the Henry Hub facility in Louisiana, on Sunday closed delivery in and out of the site.

<snip>
The September contracts for natural gas expire Monday, and the last delivery day was scheduled for Wednesday

The Pentegon has how much fucking cash and they could not send a few black hawks over to New Orleans to save those 100k people stranded because they happened to be poor/black/elderly in George Bush's America...blah going back to bedddddddddddddddddd!!!!
