20 buildings have collapsed
" Nagin said that the 200 stranded people included 20 police officers who were riding out the storm at their homes in preparation to take over shifts from other officers. He said that boats would be dispatched on rescue missions later in the afternoon...

Mayor Nagin issued a "boil water" recommendation for water in the city - except for Algiers and the CBD due to a water main line break that may have compromised the water.

Nagin said at least 20 buildings in the city had collapsed and that it might be 48 hours before residents would be allowed back to their homes to assess the damage."

11. This, on top of all the deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan
All the death and destruction becomes overwhelming, especially in cases when it could have been avoided altogether.

45. No need to feel anything. The worst IS yet to come.
Those oil rigs accounted for some 40% of our oil needs.

This is a huge hit and it could devestate the world economy.

Pity we didn't learn 25 years ago... thanks reagan. Pity you're not alive and coherent to see the results of your policies. Not that you were 25 years ago either, but you were what the people want. Pity they're whining now too.

I last spoke with her late last afternoon. She was going to her cousin's house on (relatively) higher ground in the Briar Lake Subdivision. Her house is probably flooded, It almost flooded two years ago in heavy rains. My God, I hope she's OK. Her husband just died from cancer last Thanksgiving and now this.

I hope your friend is OK.

31. I'm praying for everyone at this point. Cell and land line service is out
Storm hampers long-distance, cell services

03:25 PM CDT on Monday, August 29, 2005

Anick Jesdanun / Associated Press

Cell phone service was spotty and long-distance callers met busy signals on Monday as Hurricane Katrina knocked out key telecommunications hubs along the Gulf Coast.

Most long-distance and cellular providers reported trouble, while the dominant local phone provider for the hurricane zone, BellSouth Corp., did not immediately quantify the extent of storm-related service disruptions.

Sprint Nextel Corp.'s long-distance switch in New Orleans failed soon after the storm hit, meaning no long distance call could be placed into or out of the area, said company spokesman Charles Fleckenstein. Customers who tried got busy signals or recordings informing them that all circuits are busy, he said.

<snip>

Many of AT&T Corp.'s facilities in the area were operating on backup generator power but some were completely down, likely because of flooding. Long-distance calls could not be properly relayed along AT&T's Gulf Coast fiber-optics routes.

He's a native of New Orleans. He grew up down near the levees and the Audubon Park zoo in NO before moving to Slidell. I used to have family in NO, Mobile and Orange Beach, AL who lived through Camille and Betsy and Frederick. They have, unfortunately, since passed on.

We were just in Lacombe and NO last summer and last Thanksgiving. It was so beautiful there. My brother-in law died from cancer last Nov. We were there for the funeral. So sad.

God have mercy on LA, MS and AL.

There are lots of reports that cell phones are out, so info is hard to come by. It's just incredibly frustrating.

And I don't disagree with you--the damned Guard and equipment is stretched thin because of this false President and his make-believe war.

25. Back when Houston was flooded...
I remember seeing TV reports of bunches of people being stranded on their rooftops for 24+ hrs..all you could see were the roofs, no houses. I thought the same thing as you. Richest country in the world, all of our military resources and we cannot even rescue any of the people. TV cameras/copters were sure whirling around the area, getting live shots of those stranded, yet not a single rescue mission?

35. People on the wwltv forum are complaining about the same thing
"I saw on the Weather Channel a report attempt to send a report from Covington, but the signal was immediately lost. I have heard random reports that Covington, Mandeville, Slidell, and Pearl River may have sustained absolutely severe catostrophic damage.

These news agencies need to get to the northshore!!! I am tired of hearing these reporters in New Orleans and surrounding areas say "Katrina's bark was worse than her bite". Seems premature to say such things given the fact that Kenner, the westbank, and other areas are underwater and partially destroyed.....and who even knows what happened to the northshore!"

I understand that helicopters don't function very well in high wind conditions. It's different if it's a bombing and flying through smoke.

43. just heard that some Coast Guard fella was going down from
the Boston area, by the name of Mixon- he said he was ready to do pick ups off of roofs and had night scope vision ability- it's something at least-
Said he was glad to be doing it- I'm so glad he is too.

An OLD (now dead) dear friend of mine lived through the huricane of '38 (which was terrible here in NH) - told me of waking up in his upstairs farmhouse attic, to the feel of water on his hand which was dangling off the bed- it was the Contoocook River- had he not climbed onto the roof, clung to the chimney and been rescued by someone in a row boat, he would have been swept away.

Those copters that the coast guard use to rescue the lost at sea, are pretty awesome about dealing with wild winds- i'm hoping for the best-
Wish i could do something!!!!

I have only heard very limited reports that there may possibly be catastrophic damage to areas on the northshore. Slidell was right on the left eyewall of Katrina and winds were VERY high. I am still waiting to hear more on CNN.
