For those who were just watching CNN, Jeanne Meserve gave a harrowing (and tearful,) account of what she saw today in New Orleans. It's obvious that she was crushed by what she saw, and by the fact that there are still untold numbers of people stranded on rooftops that can't be reached by rescuers.

She says they'll be back out at first light with rescuers. Let's hope that those folks can hang on till morning.

Watching all the helicopter footage--and hearing the tears in her voice-- makes me feel that, regardless of the "dodged a bullet" stories earlier in the day, New Orleans and its neighbors have taken a horrible horrible hit. I'm gonna send loving thoughts and money to the Red Cross.

6. I think the death toll

will be much higher than anyone anticipated. The areas that took the worst of Katrina were filled with people too poor to evacuate or even to hole up at one of the hotels downtown.

We spent the weekend at an event in Portland, OR. One of the other attendees lives in Tennessee. She told us yesterday that the initial hurricane is awful, but the days after are much worse. No water, no ice, and tomorrow's forecast in New Orleans and Biloxi is 90 degrees for a high.

It's time for us to send some money to the Red Cross, too.

7. I really want to know what "too poor to evacuate" means.

I know it means they can't buy gas or transportation out, but certainly isn't this what our National Guard is supposed to be about? To help those evacuate and take care of those who can't get out on their own?

8. Jeanne Meserve was Best In Class with that reporting.

She listened to people dying and had no means of helping. She saw them bleeding and terrible injuries and that is what we need to know -the true impact. CNN on whole had been pretty frivolous with their reporting. Jeanne's reporting was excellent and she just raised the bar for all of her collegues. For that alone, I thank her.

9. The most awesome report I'd heard all day

I spent the entire day jumping stations to stay up on the storm. Her report made me cry, and that is not an easy thing to do.
