38. here's a report on two Seabees doing rescue in Gulfport
http://eyesonkatrina.blogspot.com/

...Two young Seabees who lived in the brick house just south of the railroad tracks were climbing over the piles of debris on 18th.

...The Seabees crawled all over the place, hollering for survivors. They'd survived Katrina, with water up to their waists in the first floor of their brick rental.

Petty Officer Third Class Jesse Good said he'd been the target of an insurgent mortar attack while stationed in the Middle East with NMCB 7.

"I haven't seen nothing like that in Iraq," said Good, 22.

10. News from Amite!
In Amite we have no electricity and numberous trees are down. Trees are down along Hwy 16 east of town and on streets all through amite and roseland. As far as we can tell the entire town is without power and will be out of power for a while. I've lived here for 15 years and I am from New Orleans, never have I seen so many trees and power lines down. Most houses have some structural damage but no flooding. We can make local calls but can't make long distance calls because the circuits are down.
I hope this info will help those needing info about their families. We will help in anyway we can....

Our thoughts and prays are with all.....

21. Perhaps you can setup some kind of a local relay

by offering to send text messages from people locally who can reach you and having people on the other end of an internet relationship make voice calls with the messages to phone numbers provided

I think that ham operators do some things like this with a different technology, of course.

12. If the place is destroyed, we will have equipment to restore it.
The Kenner Fire Department has sent two thirds of its equipment and personnel to a command post at a school at Mount Hermon, in Washington Parish. Fire Chief Mike Zito says the move is designed to protect some of the citys equipment from wind and flooding damage.

Public works department vehicles and some ambulances also have been moved out of the city. Zito says -- quote -- "If the place is destroyed, we will have equipment to restore it.

48. Found something..good luck..i'm in florida so I know how hard this is
Quote:
I have a cousin in Franklinton with her husband, children, and husband's family up from as far away as Buras. On 10th st. or Ave, I can't remember which the road is called, the house was intact. The few places she could see from her area is the flower shop on a corner that was gone and a commercial building lost the roof. This was earlier yesterday.

My cousin's sister called yesterday evening with news from my Franklinton cousin, which is her sister. She said the same. They were okay with NO flooding, just heavy wind. Neither of us know if there is flooding today though. The phones were down and power was out. My cousin called her sister using the cell phone and even then the battery to the cell phone was going dead.

If I hear more from that area, I will post. I hope your family is somewhere close there. I don't know anything of other areas because my cousin didn't have a radio. Her sister and I were telling her what we were hearing on the news up here.

52. NEW POST ON WWLTV BOARD
FUCK!

I am in southern Illinois, but I have recieved a couple of reports about Wash. Parish. I just recieved a report at noon for the Stoney Point area west of Franklinton. Many of the houses along Hwy 450 near Stoney Point and along Wilford Bond road are intact.

Lots of trees are down in this area mostly in people's yards.

Apparently at least two tornadoes went through near this area. One near the Tangi/Wash border near the fish house on Hwy 16 and another outside of Franklinton on the way to Bogalusa. The second knocked down a lot of trees and is effectively stopping all traffic to Bogalusa from Franklinton.

I have heard (third hand) that Franklinton has suffered major damage. This person grew up in Franklinton. Her exact words were that "the Franklinton we knew prior to this storm has ceased to exist". I apoligize for creating fear with third hand info, but I thought that people would want to know about the damage in the area.

May God Bless and Guide the people in Wash. Parish, LA and MS!

Jason

54. I was mostly OK until I read that post.
And now I'm starting to freak. Generations of my family grew up in Franklinton. I never lived there, but both sides of my family are from there, I would go there every summer to be with my grandma. I am related to half the freakin town. Even though I never lived there I always felt like I was "from there." My grandad owned a pig farm and the feedmill. My cousin owns Jenkins nursery out on the Amite highway. My great-great grandfather Yates who emigrated from London with his family and he had seven kids. Most of those cousins still live in the area. ALL of my family history is in that one small town.
