Crawford Peace House pays off $54,000 mortgage
Does anyone else find this odd? And why did Anarchy1999 insist that this wasn't true?

with 150,000 in donations, Anne Wright tells us...”Due to the crush of people expected, water supplies may run short if more donations do not come in. So BYO.”

but they paid off the mortgage….

“I’ve been walking around with my mouth open and in a daze for the past two or three days,” said Kay Lucas, Peace House director. “It’s a blessing, a miracle. It’s like the parable of the loaves and the fishes.”

http://www.infoshop.org/inews/article.php?story=20050815154721646

Sheehan well-wishers are drawn to the house, which has served as the hospitality center for anti-administration activists visiting here since 2003, and have provided enough donations to pay off its $54,000 mortgage, said one of its founders, Hadi Jawad.

“We have been waiting for somebody like Cindy Sheehan to show up for the past 2 1/2 years,” the Dallas activist said Monday.
http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/metro/stories/MYSA081605.5B.house.solvent.dbe1029.html

More than $150,000 in donations have poured into the Crawford Peace House since Sheehan arrived Aug. 6 and started a makeshift campsite along the road leading to Bush’s ranch, vowing to stay until he talks to her. Because the rural campsite is small, most of the hundreds of visitors spend much of their time a few miles away at the Peace House, which has become Sheehan’s headquarters.

Not only is the phone back on, but the $54,000 mortgage is about to be paid.

“This has gone absolutely way beyond our imagination or expectations ever,” said Hadi Jawad, one of the co-founders. http://www.dentonrc.com/sharedcontent/APStories/stories/D8C51JPO0.html

Meanwhile on the Bill Maher show last friday, Cindy stated that her bank account was overdrawn. What is wrong with this picture? Wasn’t that money meant more for Cindy Sheehan than the mortgage of the Crawford Peace House??

also interesting
http://n1obium.blogspot.com/2005/08/camp-casey.html

"Rosie O’Donnell called to offer her support, “what did we need?” Buses for the rally Saturday and flights for more families and Vets to join us here. “Fine” she said, “I’ll send a check to cover it all.” Yipppeee, we have 5 buses to help bring in the supporters from Dallas, Ft Worth, Houston and Austin to the big rally on Saturday. Some fabulous new organizers arrived and went to work on details, flyers were made and organizations contacted by 2:00."

Why the hell didn’t the Crawford Peace House use donations to help out with buses??

you might understand the hole better. After spending multiple days and weekends there, it's been an interesting experience.

I'm waiting till this whole thing is over to post my opinion on the Peace House and the movement extraneous of Cindy and GSFP that occurred in Crawford.

Until then.. Viva Cindy and screw the rest.

5. I'm missing your point, I suppose.
When people donate or give money (or a gift) to an organization, it becomes that organization's money (or property) to do with as they see fit as long as it's legal.

Besides, with the mortgage paid, Crawford Peace House can now concentrate even more on important matters... like peace.

9. Perhaps Cindy told them to keep it.
If I'm not mistaken, the Crawford Peace House belongs to the American Friends Service Committee, though I haven't seen the Quakers mentioned anywhere yet, but, then, I haven't been following it real closely. If it is the Friends, I know from personal experience, you couldn't ask for a better, more dedicated Peace organization. The money/house will be used for peace work. The Friends don't talk about themselves, nor Jesus, nor the Bible, everything about the one's I've been around is simply about identifying and doing the work of peace and justice.

, last year or before that, when their "leader" mentioned some Quakers had bought a house in Crawford.

On edit: Special usage indicated by " " around the word leader, is intended to imply something like "as much as Quakers have anything like a leader" (not a criticism of his leadership) because they're pretty lateral in their group relationships.

41. I met a group of young folks from Austin..
Very progressive looking, dyed hair, earrings, yadda yadda.. fabulous freaks... They had an extra shade structure thing :) and brought it over to shade my husband and I.

I was surprised but greatly heartened when I asked them about themselves and one told me his was a Quaker and how you could always find a good number of Quakers at peace movements. They stuck out so much to me because although I havent been this weekend.. I was there every other weekend from Sunday, full day 1.. and have been disappointed in the fact that the younger generation - ie, under 30 - seems to be so poorly represented. It was great to see a bunch of early 20 somethings that were just so dang nice.

12. What exactly is your problem sir?
I worked the first two days as the camp RN at CC2
setting it up, and making it work. What ever
supplies I asked for, I received.

The shuttles were rented and fueled around the Clock

The CHP kept the thousands of visitors
cared for, and fed, Safe and cool
under the large not so cheap tent.
As well as Camp Casey 1.

Ice ATC, Porta potties, cleaned ATC

I don't believe you know one iota of
which you spout.

29. Well color me dumb
I thought the Crawford Peace House went up when Cindy Sheehan went to Texas. I didn't know it was already there. I wonder when it was set up and why Crawford Texas was chosen as its home?

I remember listening to some spiritual speaker talk about how he used to fret over giving money to homeless people on the streets of NY. He did not want them to spend the money on drugs or alcohol. But then he realized that it was the act of giving that was the miracle and only good could come from it. Even if the person used the money to buy drugs the love that was the driving force behind the giving it it the real healer.

It's all good.

If donations made it possible for an organization like that to pay off a mortgage, great!

I suspect there's some supposed "deeper" intention behind this post.

...and that's why I'm smiling. If they think that "Oooh! The big bad Peace House paid off its mortgage" is anything but a happy occasion for us they're living up to my expectations.

and I asked my dad why people did bad things. he would say "because they are sick". I will never forget when we saw the story on TV of a church bombing in the south that killed several little girls (would have been around '63 or '64) and I asked my dad who would have done such a horrible thing. He said "A sick man, honey, a very sick man."

Those little girls were my age. I still feel sad when I think of this. I can still hear my dad say "A sick man, honey."

52. Attacking the person, not the problem...
I read in the DU rules that you are not allowed to name call, call people freepers, etc so why aren't you all being banned right now?

You see I posted stories with links, were they right wing sources? I have seen this reported all over, everywhere, including the Crawford Peace House Site. I believe the many sites I have read this on as opposed to people who immediately attack me instead of discussing the post.

I just read this elsewhere "The Peace House has never tried to hide the fact they got donations to pay off the mortgage, they proclaimed it loudly to the world because they were so happy for the help and the giving that came from people’s hearts."

Maybe you all think it's normal, I think it is sort of selfish myself to keep this money that I believe most people meant for Cindy and the protest. The protest could have been made better and bigger by using the money instead of hoarding it. And then to ask for more??

And my thing is... Cindy. I love Cindy! She has been unemployed for a while now, traveling the country, and she's out of cash. I am sure she would have liked to pay off her mortgage. She's too nice to say anything, but I thought other people would care more about her than the Crawford Peace House Mortgage. Cindy is the one that will continue going around the country fighting this evil regime.

And perhaps she would have wanted the money donated to New Orleans, since this morning in the press conference she said all supplies from Camp Casey were going there.

Is this a discussion board? It's really weird how everyone chimes in and attacks instead of discussing concepts.

63. Your "concept" is wrong
They have used the money for Camp Caseys and the operations there now. Good for them that they can pay off their mortgage also. Did you go to Crawford? Did you only eat/drink what you brought or pay for what you used? What about the porta-potties? Did you pay for them also? Your basic concept is wrong about hoarding the money and not using it. Your posting of "facts" leading to wrong conclusions is what the problem is. It is really weird how you do this and then claim higher moral superiority.

70. Discussing concepts takes two people
you seem to like to post flamebait then leave. It's really weird how you think this is a discussion.

78. 1 doesn't work, 1's a blog and here's a telling quote from another
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 12:30 AM by uppityperson
"Now the Peace House can pay its bills on time for a while, as well as expand and improve Sheehan's camp. The house has spent thousands on food for the hundreds of visitors and $20,000 to rent a tent that can shade 1,000 people. The tent used for concerts is on a private one-acre lot, owned by a landowner who also opposes the war, about a mile from the original campsite." http://www.dentonrc.com/sharedcontent/APStories/stories/D8C51JPO0.html

77. What a waste of money...
CPH will be a ghost in 3 years and completely irrelevant. That money certainly could have been invested better... shame on them.

80. Locking
Both reposting previously locked items AND accusing people of being trolls are rules violations.
