I drove past Camp Qualls as I entered Crawford, and again as we headed to MacGregor to park and catch the shuttle to Camp Casey. Here are some observations.
Camp Casey signifies that Cindy is honoring her son. It's not Camp Sheehan.
Camp Qualls seems to be more for the benefit of the family. By benefit, I don't mean healing, I mean "Look at us!".
Camp Qualls was set up on a street corner and really was hindering traffic. There were police officers directing traffic to allow for the masses of people crossing the street. Anyone entering Crawford would be inconvenienced.
Camp Casey is in a location that only bothers the people on the Lazy W Ranch, and their immediate neighbors. (Many thanks to the land owner of Camp Casey 2!)
Camp Qualls had someone with a megaphone yelling. There were people with signs that talked about Casey, suggesting that Cindy was dishonoring him. You could smell the hate in the air if you cracked your car window.
Camp Casey had people singing. The only time we yelled when I was there was to shout "NOT ONE MORE" when Cindy asked how many more should die. We were shuttled by volunteers. Volunteers made sure that people holding signs by the road had water and food. Those with the spray bottles were particularly appreciated. There was an overall feeling of cooperation and peace.
For the four hour drive back home, all I could think about was how different the two camps were. it was simply amazing.
