Does anyone care that Bush cut Hurricane Protection funding to NOLA?
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 09:54 AM by demo dutch
including a study to determine ways to protect the area from Cat 5 hurricanes.

In fiscal year 2006, the New Orleans district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is bracing for a record $71.2 million reduction in federal funding. It would be the largest single-year funding loss ever for the New Orleans district, Corps officials said. I've been here over 30 years and I've never seen this level of reduction, said Al Naomi, project manager for the New Orleans district... The cuts mean major hurricane and flood protection projects will not be awarded to local engineering firms. Also, a study to determine ways to protect the region from a Category 5 hurricane has been shelved for now .

7. Look at this: "Bush cut disaster prep funding in 2002 budget..."
Bush cut disaster prep funding in 2002 budget, killing Clinton-era program

I posted this Sunday night.

When President George W. Bush sent his proposed 2002 budget to Congress yesterday afternoon, there was a glaring omission. The president decided to pull funding for FEMA's Project Impact, effectively ending the disaster-preparedness campaign
which since 1997 has given $25 million per year to communities across the country for disaster mitigation, saying the project "has not proven effective."

The project, which began as a pilot program in 1997 with 7 communities, has since grown to include over 250 communities.

Both King and Pierce counties have received significant funding from the FEMA grant, using the funds to emphasize home and small business preparedness and transportation reliability in the event of an earthquake or other disaster.
