16. google inspector javert or jean valjean...
characters from "les miserables".

jean valjean stole a loaf of bread and was hunted for the rest of his life by inspector javert, who had made it his lifes goal to imprison jean valjean.

a very stunted and incomplete summary of "les miserables" by victor hugo. you oughta read it. so much of literature directly corelates to todays situations.

And we all talk about that here on DU every day, and we will continue to do so.

Today, however, the issue is people looting after a hurricane.

15. Respectfully,
my opinion is that people looting after a hurricane is a mighty small issue.

I actually saw a video of people being busted for handfuls of what looked like Huggies. Sorry, but I can't find a link for it quickly.

28. You are so very right.
I get the feeling that some people are here simply to manipulate and exacerbate this. What a small thing to jump on, given the corruption and deceit we've been drowning in the past five years. It gives me the same feeling I got watching the media portray the looting in Baghdad. It's a way to deflect blame away from those responsible for having protected that which got looted, and for having bombed the shit out of them unprovoked in the first place.

I read the article, and there's only one small reference to someone claiming to have seen someone stealing beer and cigarettes from a Circle K. The article is mostly about storm damage, not about looting.

In 2004, the ratio of average CEO pay to the average pay of a production (i.e., non-management) worker was 431-to-1, up from 301-to-1 in 2003, according to "Executive Excess," an annual report released Tuesday by the liberal research groups United for a Fair Economy and the Institute for Policy Studies.

"Had the minimum wage risen as fast as CEO compensation since 1990, the researchers calculated, it would now be $23.03 an hour instead of just $5.15. And the average production worker would be making $110,126 a year instead of $27,460" :wow:

23. High time to demand $25 absolute minimum wage
Just as soon as the rug finally is pulled from under this criminally unbalanced "economy" cheating 80% of the country's population, whose wages are declining, or "stagnating" as I believe I heard Chairman Greenspan say not so long ago.

We will accept nothing less than 25 dollars minimum wage as a first step to help balance the imbalance. Chávez's cut rate oil to us will be a big boost to us WHEN WE TAKE OVER THE SHOW!!

22. That's not the only way these CEOs loot.
Here's a personal experience story about insurance looting committed by big corporations during hurricanes:

A hurricane hit Puerto Rico in 1999 or 2000. My husband's company had a manufacturing facility there. Insurance adjusters were flown down there and wined and dined by the CEO and top management.

The inventory wasn't touched by the hurricane... but after some financial agreements, the adjusters declared the inventory destroyed and a large settlement paid. The CEO and top management got bonuses for negotiating a great settlement. The adjusters made out on the side.

Total looted by this one corporation: $11.7 M not including the fact that the inventory was eventually sold. The entire $11.7 M was distributed as bonuses and pay-offs.

What a scam.

Welcome aboard Mule!

And if their 'friends' in the media can be encouraged to cry "wolf!" ... it helps.

If you want to help...

http://www.redcross.org/pressrelease/0,1077,0_314_4473,00.html

Yeah, there is still some good left in the world.

WASHINGTON, Monday, August 29, 2005 — The American Red Cross is launching the largest mobilization of resources in its history for a single natural disaster. Hurricane Katrina, a deadly Category 4 storm, is barreling ashore this morning along the Gulf Coast and has the potential to leave widespread devastation in its wake.

"Hurricane Katrina is wreaking havoc for southeast Florida and the Gulf coast states," said Joe Becker, Senior Vice President of Preparedness and Response for the American Red Cross. "The Red Cross will meet the challenge by doing what we do best—coming together to respond with tireless compassion to take care of our neighbors."

The Red Cross is mobilizing on all fronts to bring relief to storm victims. More than two hundred Red Cross shelters are housing thousands of residents who fled Katrina’s wrath. All available resources from across the country, including thousands of staff and volunteers are being moved to safe areas, so additional relief efforts can begin immediately after the storm passes. More than 200 emergency response vehicles (ERVs) and countless other Red Cross resources are en route or on the scene to provide hot meals, snacks, bottled water and distribute other much-needed relief supplies. In coordination with the Southern Baptists, preparations have been made to provide more than 500,000 hot meals to storm-weary residents each day.

"We are prepared at every level for what will likely be a catastrophic disaster," said Lois Grady-Wesbecher, Manager of the Disaster Operations Center at American Red Cross national headquarters. "When Mother Nature is at her worst, the American Red Cross is at its best."

Hurricane Katrina strengthened into one of the fiercest storms ever seen in the U.S. Not only has Katrina intensified, but it has also grown substantially in size—it is now about 460 miles wide—the distance from New Orleans to Atlanta. Destruction from this storm will not be limited to coastal areas. After making landfall Hurricane Katrina will progress inland Monday leaving behind a trail of flooding rains and damaging winds, spreading across the country and eventually into the Northeast. The Red Cross will continue to provide a safe haven and disaster assistance to victims along its path.

American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. You can help the victims of this and thousands of other disasters across the country each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to those in need. Call 1-800-HELP NOW or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish). Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund may be sent to your local American Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross, P. O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013. Internet users can make a secure online contribution by visiting www.redcross.org.

...I'm like those poor freepers who went to the pro-war rally with the sign that said words to the effect of:

All Wars are Wrong
Unless they're started by democrats...

See, they meant it to be sarcastic, but the freepers beat the shit out of them and tore up their sign, not recognizing the subtle twist there...

Heh. I always assume my DU audience is sharper than that. Usually I'm right.
