Bush to return to Washington because of hurricane
Reuters
Tuesday, August 30, 2005; 12:10 PM

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - President George W. Bush will return to Washington on Wednesday, two days ahead of schedule, to help oversee recovery efforts from Hurricane Katrina, the White House announced.

Up to 80 people have been reported dead in Mississippi as a result of the storm, and floodwaters have poured into low-lying New Orleans.

Risk analysts estimated the storm would cost insurers $26 billion, the most in U.S. history.

39. DC isn't going to be as effected as Texas by this storm
Why is he going to DC instead of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama? Aren't those people his "base?" :eyes:

(Answer is, of course not, the people stuck there aren't rich enough to be his base).

44. How long will it be before we can stop telling him how to do his job...
1) return to DC for this disaster...
2) provide some "meaningful" aid to Tsunami victims...
3) put together a 9/11 commission...
< many other things that should be in the book "How to be a President - 101"...>

Everything bush "oversees" turns to crap. Those people hit by Katrina have already faced one disaster; they don't need another.

30. How Will He Explain in 06 Federal Funding Cut of $71.2 Mil. New Orleans
In fiscal year 2006, the New Orleans district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is bracing for a record $71.2 million reduction in federal funding.

It would be the largest single-year funding loss ever for the New Orleans district, Corps officials said.

I've been here over 30 years and I've never seen this level of reduction, said Al Naomi, project manager for the New Orleans district. I think part of the problem is it's not so much the reduction, it's the drastic reduction in one fiscal year. It's the immediacy of the reduction that I think is the hardest thing to adapt to.

There is an economic ripple effect, too. The cuts mean major hurricane and flood protection projects will not be awarded to local engineering firms. Also, a study to determine ways to protect the region from a Category 5 hurricane has been shelved for now.
