CNN Crawl: Wal-Mart donates $1 million to Salvation Army
to help the relief efforts of Katrina.

Maybe it's just me but...why didn't they donate it to the Red Cross? :wtf:

1. Well, there is a "cross" in the words "Red Cross" . . .
But they're just not explicitly salvation-related enough, doncha know?

2. Now its time for Target and KMART to show their worth
but only $1 mil geez wal-mart is really pinching the penny.

3. Wasn't it WM that refused to let the Salvation Army in front of their
stores during Christmas last year? I remember it being at least one of the big discount chains, but I'm not positive if it was WM or Target.

If it was WM, why the big change of heart???

4. The Salvation Army is a Christian-based Charity,
and the Red Cross is not. That simple.

5. Ever hear that you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth...
"The Salvation Army is prepared to serve 400,000 hot meals per day to residents and first responders in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. More than 200 volunteers, employees and officers will serve the meals from 72 mobile canteens that are able to provide up to 5,000 hot meals per day. In addition, the Army is prepared to move in two, 54-foot mobile kitchens that can provide 20,000 hot meals per day."

Good for Wal-Mart. Thank you for your donation.

12. Let's please not jump on the SA for being what they are.
I know lots of us have objections to them for a variety of reasons (me too, since they discriminate against gay employees), but they are one of the biggest providers of services and shelter to the homeless in the country. They do TREMENDOUS good, and they have the resources and infrastructure to help save peoples' lives in the affected areas.

As for Wal Mart, well, I hate them and don't shop there, and the donation is all for publicity. But I don't see any other corps, so far, donating a million bucks. Good on them, I say.

18. First, not jumping on SA
I'm jumping on Wal-Mart for their choice. The Red Cross is already there and fully integrated with the government agencies to assist in the disaster relief.

Second, there are other companies that are donating....all to the Red Cross. Lowe's (taking in store donations and will match up to $1 million dollars), Office Depot ($1 million), Anheuser Busch (12,600 cases of drinking water).

My post was anticipatory in nature. Most DU'ers hate the Salvation Army without really knowing what they do. I'm glad to hear some other companies are stepping up to bat.

One big difference between the SA and the Red Cross is the SA runs permanent shelters that aleady exist, and there are probably a dozen or more of them in and around New Orleans alone, so they're already set up to take people in. The Red Cross has to get there, set up shop in someone else's building, etc. Not saying they're not effective, of course they are, but so is the SA. Another thing with the Red Cross is that everybody always thinks to donate to them and sometimes they get more than they can even use, like what happened after 9/11. And in so doing, private charities sometimes get left out. So I think it's good the money is being spread around a little.

On edit: I also have to agree, $1,000,000 is *nothing* to Wal Mart. They could easily afford $20,000,000.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Wal-Mart said Tuesday that it closed more than 120 stores due to Hurricane Katrina while the world's largest retailer and some of its biggest rivals donated money and supplies to residents in affected areas along the Gulf Coast states.

Wal-Mart Stores (Research) said it would donate $1 million to the Salvation Army for relief assistance such as meals for victims and emergency and rescue personnel.

The retailer said it would also accept customer donations nationwide at all of its stores this week as well as credit-card contributions through walmart.com.

Will match donations up to $1 million.

23. I saw on a news report
that they are also giving lots of supplies. Not everything has to be measured in dollar amounts. Would you rather they gave nothing? Everyone has pet charities; Salvation Army may be their's.

to Pat Robertson's org and Walmart with the Salvation Army, we can see which way the wind is blowing. United Corporate Theocracy of Amerika.....
