I haven't seen the National Guard in action yet.

Am I wrong?

Maybe next year, if they aren't in Iran then.

10. I think I just saw a NG Huey
But mostly it's the Coast Guard.
National Guard would normally be everywhere in the disaster zone.

11. Well....
Coast Guard helicopters are much more suited to this mission.

I doubt the NG has very many rescue copters or at least copters with winch and basket ability.

I found this link for what copters the Army National Guard use:

http://www.arng.army.mil/about_us/equipment/default.asp?category_id=52

I would guess that the Black Hawk would be the most appropriate but how many are outfiited with winch and baskets? Can those be added quickly? Anyone know?

19. As far as I know...
Rescue Hoists come installed on the helicopters... you can't just add them on unfortunately.

21. Rope ladders aren't high tech gear
and will work fine as would a simple loop on one end of thick mooring line and a 3 man belaying team inside the chopper.
If you're stuck on your roof facing the prospect of the sun going down in another 5 hours with water all around you for miles and nothing to eat, you aren't to care if the rescue rope chafes your armpits. Getting out of there and getting clean water food and shelter is what's important.

24. Being able to climb a rope ladder is physically demanding...
...and is more dangerous than a basket.

Would I be able to do it? With some effort, yes.

But don't forget alot of the people stuck there couldn't get out for whatever reason. Kids and old people especially would have difficulty.

Still that may become very necessary.

12. MSNBC showing Coast Guard rescues live right now
No National Guard that I have seen. Their helicopters are probably all in Iraq. God damn Bush.

Kudos to the Coast Guard. They are showing whole families being air lifted off of rooftops.

29. Yes. They are OK. Got word to us by ham radio operator somehow.
We got a call this AM from Mr. CottonBears'niece in KY. I have no idea if their homes are OK or where or how they are. They are alive, which is good. They had been planning to ride out the storm. I hope their homes are still there and can be rebuilt. :( Thanks for your concern.

I think the CG only has orange ones, so they're visible.

22. Yes, they are
The green ones could be either Army, Air Force, ANG, or AirNG Black Hawks. The Coast Guard only has Dolphins, and Jayhawks, and those are always Orange and White
