And gulf water temperatures are still at near-record highs. I've heard more than one person call this "the storm of a lifetime." They're wrong. It's going to keep happening, again and again.

I would be able to tell you that, while there will be other hurricanes, another one of this magnitude hitting our coasts this year is unlikely.

Unfortunately, global climate change with the increasing temperatures in the waters where hurricanes form means that we will likely see more of this magnitude and likely this year. By five years from now, we won't remember Katrina because we will have had 20 others that have wreaked as much and even more damage.

10. One of the network people made an interesting point.

He said that Hurricane Katrina passed over southern Florida on the 13 year anniversary of Hurricane Andrew which struck on August 24, 1992. Andrew was the FIRST hurricane of the season in 1992. Katrina is the 11th named storm so far this year.

Hurricane Camille which hit August 17-18, 1969, was only the third named storm of that year.

This has been a bad year so far and with water temperatures as high as they are, we'll probably see a few more hurricanes before the season is done.

23. I've thought a lot about my years in hurricane country

in the last few days. I can remember one year, I think it was 1983, where there were a record seven hurricanes/tropical storms in the Gulf, but they were all little ones. A day's inconvenience, tons of rain, nothing like these monster storms we're seeing in this decade.

I now live in an area where hurricanes are not a consideration, bushfires are - and I think, if I ever returned to the US (not likely), I would just not live in hurricane country again, if I had a choice.

So many people have no choice, cannot move. My heart goes out to them, because I fear we are going to see more and more storms like this.
