Good God. Now they're playing that damn Lee Greenwood song...
ostensibly to bouy the hurricane survivors.
It's aired three times today already. You know. 'proud to be a merkin.'

I keep thinking of that headline in The Onion: "Lee Greenwood hopes for new war so he can sell a few more copies of that damn song."

2. Twin Cities C-W station. They never miss a chance to hype
jingoistic pro-war shit even though its supposed to be a music station. Toby Keith you can hear all the time.
not surprising they would drag out that old song. I'll be those stranded in N.O. and Mississippi appreciate the sentiment.

3. Oh, way up in MN - FAR away from the human misery that is Katrina...
Not criticizing your post, MN, just ASTOUNDED that the jingoistic dumbfucks would think that the Greenwood Nazi-march song would comfort ANYONE facing death, starvation and destruction.

"Freedom isn't free!":puke:

6. In Fargo?
Huh.

I'm sitting in my office on Broadway following the news about my *real* hometown. (Fargo's nice, but it will never be that)

If they play that crap up here and dedicated it to New Orleans, I will pull into the parking lot of the KFGO building and tell them to stop in person

A--holes.

9. MPls. not Fargo. KFGO knows how to cover a flood!
K-102, or whatever.
I know KFGO, the mighty 790. Brother in law works there....now THAT's a station with flood coverage experience...

12. I AM proud to be an American. I dislike mawkish attempts
to appeal to shallow patriotism. Maybe it's not the song itself, but the aura that now surrounds it and the gravitas applied to it.

But I AM proud to be an American....in a Pete Seeger sort of way.

13. Pride goeth before the fall
One of the seven deadly sins and all.

Being American should be a source of reflection and humility, not boastful, arrogant PRIDE. All that chest-beating is for warmongering assfucks.

20. I don't know if proud is the word
I guess I'm happy I was born someplace where things come as easy as they do here. But I didn't do anything to earn that so I don't know if it's something to be proud of.

22. Why is that so uniquely American?
Somehow if a Spanish, German, Dutch, French, Russian, Chinese, Australian etc., etc. family lost everything they wouldn't "work for all my life. And I had to start again, with just my children and my wife"??

I'm so sick of this xenophobic myopia that infects the morons of this country.

What's not mentioned in the song, of course, is that the reason you've lost everything is because your American government has allowed their corporate buddies to move their job out of the country to avoid having to pay taxes to support the infrastructure of the country you so love.

And when that corporate interest becomes threatened from some outside source, it is saps who have lost everything that join the military to protect the corporate interest. All the while singing "I'm Proud to Be An American"...a nation of buffoons and dupes.

Isn't there more important things to worry about? It's just a crappy song.

18. Am I the only one who finds this song a bit ironic
specifically this line:

"I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free"

It's the kind of thing you'd say in the context of "at the very least I know I'm free, even if everything else is fucked up."

I hate that song.
