I am sick about the animals trapped in the
flood waters and the debris, so I gave to the Humane Society's Disaster relief fund. For those of you who are interested, there is a link on their website and it also details their disaster preparations:

8. YEAH I have! Have you?
I have over 40 family members down there. They need help more than some animals. BTW, I have two cats who are like part of the family. AFTER ALL of the people are safe, THEN I'll worry about the freaking cats and dogs!

12. If I had forty family members "down there" (not sure where that is)
I think I might be doing more than bitching about another poster worrying about the animals on an internet board.

But, then I am not you.

Perhaps you are relieving tension.

22. I'll tell you what I want you to do.....if you see a post where someone is
worried about the animals in New Orleans, or other areas hit, DON'T click on it. IF you can't stop yourself, then don't respond in an ugly manner to those of us who are thinking of them.

As far as your family members are concerned, I genuinely hope that they are doing as well as possible under these horrible circumstances.

If you think taking care of animals is more important than making sure all the people are taken care of FIRST, then we have nothing to discuss.

40. What do you suppose you're accomplishing with your criticism?
Many people --I'm one-- don't make a lot of distinction between humans and the species of non-humans who share our lives. If you do, then so much the worse for those cats who are 'like' part of the family. Think how frightened, desperate, and vulnerable they'd feel, if they knew that in your eyes they're not really part of your family, and that you'll sacrifice them if need be.

49. I didn't think you understood what we're saying, and every post you make
convinces me more completely of that.

None of us would sacrifice humans for the wellbeing of non-humans---but we wouldn't sacrifice the non-humans for the humans, either. That's the part you seem unable to grasp. To us, our non-human family members are real family, not 'like' family. They're not animated pieces of furniture, to be taken care of as long as convenient and sacrificed when they become a burden. They're real family members, and they're no less deserving of our care and protection than our kids are.

So don't criticise us for something you aren't able to understand, okay? It does you no credit.

as you came into this thread with both barrells blazing, just because people are concerned about helping helpless animals.

See the irony in it all?

And what does that have to do with what "some" DUers are made of?

You sure are showing what "you" are made of.

38. you know, when I have bad days like you are having right now
I try my best not to post on DU.

Don't let friends post stupid is my motto.

Last month I lost one of my cats quite suddenly, and it took a lot for me to shake that chip off my shoulder.

I wound up apologizing to a lot of people in the process.

*hint, hint*

For me, all life is precious. We could not have know about your family members. But you didn't have to come into this thread pissing on everyone.

Not unless you're trying to imitate R. Kelly.

You can't wait to help animals after you help all the people-the animals will be dead. Since we domesticated them, we are responsible for them and they are not able to help themselves when everything is flooded.

24. Easy Cruella
It's possible to help both human AND animal victims of Katrina. And in any event, making sure that the animals are safe directly helps humans- wounded, hungry animals are a huge hazard, and dead, drowned animals even moreso.

We care about all living beings.

We certainly care about people but we can care about other creatures as well.

43. I don't get this about hotels. First, they should really allow
animals even in non-emergency situations. And second, at least they can allow animals in emergency situations. It doesn't even make sense to do this to people and their pets. Some people will rather drown than leave those poor pets alone to die.

34. Some "homeless" NO animals are now in Houston
The New Orleans SPCA trucked about 260 to the Houston SPCA. They are now up for adoption to good Texas families. Donations of food & money are being expected for those who can't adopt.

http://www.spcahouston.org/spcahouston/Default.asp

Organizations helping humans are more important, but kicking a few bucks to the animals won't hurt.

48. I think we should cure cancer before we help ANY hurricane victims.
And before curing cancer, we should take on racism, but before that end hunger, and before that we should create world peace. One thing at a time, people, you can't have it all and if you care about any issue but world peace, you are a bad human being who thinks just plain WRONG.

Hopefully it's obvious I'm being sarcastic. It's wonderful that everyone has their own "pet" issues and is trying to make the world a little better. Instead of wasting energy attacking others who are trying to help, just help in your own way and be glad others are doing the same. Helping animals is equally as important as helping humans (who are animals, by the way) and sometimes more urgent, because they are forgotten and left for last.
