BBV: A Book For Every Person in Congress- We Can Do This!
I posted this elsewhere and am going to give it it's own thread. Folks, we need to make sure Congress has no excuse for ignorance of the BBV issue and no excuse to ignore it. Some of us are downloading Bev's book and taking the money we would have spent on our own book and ordering books from Amazon or David or whoever, and sending them to members of Congress. I would suggest getting books first to the ones most likely to DO something.

Someone else suggested ordering from Amazon and getting the book a high rating there. Whatever. Let's just do this. Explanation for keeping track of who is getting a copy below:

Keeping Track of Books to Congress

OK, David and I have been kind of working on this. Punpirate and I had the idea, I don't have the skills to carry it off on a web page.

David, among many other simulataneous juggling acts, may have a solution for keeping track of books ordered for congress in the works.

Meanwhile, I've got lists of congress people and I would be willing to keep track, as best I can, of which congress people are covered and by who.

So, until something better comes along, if you want to participate in this, you can email me via PM, and I'll just keep my lists handy by the computer and hopefully, create lists of reps and senators who still need the books.

What I need are the names of the states and full names of the senators and reps. Last names only won't do as there are people with the same name. I can guess by nostamj's post that it's New York and Hillary (Clinton) and Chuck (Schumer) are covered. I've got Washington's Patty Murray; and South Carolina's, Fritz Hollings.

Please also ID yourself by your DU name.

I can email back and let you know if your selection is already covered. It matters not if your state is already done. We need to blanket congress- so we can hold them all accountable!

Let's keep this kicked or transferred to similar threads.

Please DO include your rep or senators address information when you place your order for the book. You should be able to get that from the site listed below. I just called Murray's office and they told me to get literature read it would be best to send it to the D.C. offices. That may vary by person, but that's what I'll use as a guideline for now.

Addendum: Pitching a plea post following for someone to write a one page letter to include with the book if shipped from Plan Nine. If Amazon, hmmm, may have to send letter separately or ship the book to the purchaser who can then ship it to D.C. with a letter of explanation.

If you don't know your senators or reps, visit:

http://thomas.loc.gov/home/faqlist.html
Click on #7
Got to #7 select senate or house to click on
At the senate page, on the right hand side, you can click on a
PDF, or just scroll down the page.

Bev, Demactivist, Eloriel, David, Alastair, dmr, and others I don't mean to exclude, have done the heavy lifting on this. Time for us to take care of the distribution.

Let's roll!

Addemdum:

As far as I have record of, these reps/senators are covered:

Hillary Clinton
Richard Durbin
Fritz Hollings
Patty Murray

Jan Schakowsky

Great!

I don't pick who you send them to.

You tell me.

I keep track of it.

I'm hoping we DON'T flood anyone's office with duplicates, that's what we are trying to avoid.

I'm asking you to PM me, I'll check my list and email back. Either you've got your chosen assignment, or someone else has already accomplished it. If that's the case, you can choose someone else.

I see no purpose in spending money in duplicates. We might, just might, hit the whole darn congess this way.

So, tell me who they are so I may keep better track. I will do this on a first come basis.

I'd wait until you get some confirmation.

This is just an attempt to organize the effort and make sure our money is spent the best way.

3. Need a Cover Letter to Send With the Book- Gordon? Eloriel?

So that these Senators and Representatives KNOW why they are receiving the Black Box Voting box, and what we expect of them, we need a letter that David can ship along with the book. (or you can send if shipping from Amazon, whatever, they need to know why the book showed up in their offices)

Gordon, Eloriel, whoever, If you're not too busy (umph) with the Arizona uprisizing, or the Georgia locked document box, or anyone doing activism in general, could you come up with a letter, one page preferred, that lays it out for our "elected" representatives?

I know we've got some talented people here who are much better at laying it on the line, in fewer words, without burying it in detail some people don't yet understand. (Like I do)

35. LOL. You keep asking.
I keep ignoring.

Sorry, it's my utter dejection about several years' worth of urgent please to various Congresspeople being totally ignored that clouds my vision here, not to mention my motivation.

I see some people's letters to Congress and they're long, verbose, boring. (No offense.) Some poor intern is reading this and his/her eyes are glazing over. Or maybe they're not actually reading it. So cut to the chase, keep it simple, brief:

The enclosed book discusses quite possibly the most critically and urgently important issue of our time: the safety, security and validity of our vote if cast on computerized voting machines. Can they steal our elections? Will they? Have they already? Can they get away with it if they do?

Congressman XYZ, you need to know the answers to these questions (or likely answers), and you need to know them now. And then you need to help protect our vote by sponsoring Rush Holt's HR2239 which will give us voter-verified paper ballots.

Please read this book. If not, the next election we lose might be your own.

Signature
------------------

(Obviously, you need to know if s/he's already a sponsor of Holt's bill or not.)

A warning: Hedda_Foil told me a really good working definition of "conspiracy theory" today: anything that causes cognitive dissonance. So my letter might not be at ALL appropriate.

I also have no faith in my ability to get anyone in Congress's attention even if they do happen to be paying attention. So, if you're smart you'll write your own letter. ;-)

7. Because There's a Picutre on The Book, and In the Book?
Better than email sent to that great recycle bin or faxes in the circular file.

If it's in the office, someone might read it. Better yet, it gets harder to claim they had "no idea," or "no reference material." The research has been done for them.

Here's the count so far:

Barbara Boxer- liberalnproud
Hillary Clinton- Nostamj
Richard Durbin- hedda_foil
Dianne Feinstein- liberalnproud
Fritz Hollings- RedEagle
Ted Kennedy- in-cog-ni-to
Patty Murray- RedEagle

Randy "Duke" Cunningham- liberalnproud
Jesse Jaclson Jr.- in-cog-ni-to

If I missed someone, let me know. I put the names with the reps to make sure I've got this down right.

Thanks for the willingness to get the book out there!

(Gee, can we get a photo op of one of these people getting on a plane with the book conspicuously under their arm?)

25. Here's a draft cover letter.
Obviously, adapt it to fit your own needs. There's time before the book is actually available. Can you get Amazon to include a letter if you order it on line?

Dear Representative,

The enclosed book, Black Box Voting, by Bev Harris, is being sent to you by concerned citizens who are Democrats, Republicans, and others. The book will inform you about an issue that is central to American (or any) democracy: the voting process.

Traditional voting processes, including paper ballots and lever machines, have always been subject to tampering and fraud, which has been prevented by oversight of many individuals. Newer voting technologies involve computerized vote gathering, counting, and summarizing. Computers are often programmed incorrectly and can be hacked; both of these problems are invisible. Advocates for such systems ask us to trust them without proof. Computerized voting opens an opportunity for an unprecedented breakdown of the democratic process.

We hope that you will take the time to become acquainted with the issues discussed in this book. Many Americans have become aware of these problems and increasingly are demanding a more transparent and trustworthy system. Some legislative remedies have been proposed, and we hope that the information in this book will further the discussion leading to reform.

This is an important issue for members of both parties who support the democratic process.

11. You can Send a Copy to Anyone in Congress
It doesn't have to be your senators and reps. The point of keeping track of this, is to get as many copies in as many different hands in Congress as we can. So, pick someone else you like/admire/might DO something.

Hollings isn't my Senator- but he sits on some powerful committees and has been a long time advocate of the ownership cap in media. So I'm sending him a copy.

15. An easier way of doing this IMHO
would be if David could set up a web page where people could donate to the Leave No Congresscritter Uninformed Fund (someone else can think of a better title) and someone (me if no one cleverer can do this easily) can send him a paper or electronic list of all the 550 odd congresscritters. Then one person at his distribution center could send out the books and check off the list as funds come in.

17. Not a bad idea 4dog... update on list
...there's just only so much of David to spread around. We are working on this but I'm keeping track.

I'd also like people to have a choice, as I think some would prefer that.

There was also the issue of ordering through Amazon, to get this book on the big seller list.

So, trying to wear a lot of hats at the same time.

My husband is putting together an Exel sheet and I can import what's been done already into that and maybe send it to David if he wants to take it on that way. BUT, that negates tracking copies of the book sent from Amazon, unless people contact David.

So, any more ideas?

Common, the book is about $18.90, call it $20, and that seems to cover most shipping charges.

26. We'll try to straighten this out with Amazon tomorrow
Edited on Thu Oct-02-03 09:32 PM by BevHarris
Probably something minor, like a computer tagged to pull the book off if a delivery date doesn't match. If it's more than that, we'll kick up a fuss.

I note that the book had reached 3,000 rank in Amazon -- that's very good for this stage of the game, because the rankings go up to 1,500,000.

Chapter 3 and 4 will be up tonight for sure, trying to get five up tonight also.

Trying also to get chapter 6,7 and 8 up tomorrow night, because I want Chapter 8 available for weekend reading. For those who have been following everything closely all along, there is not a lot of new material in Chapters 1-6; a little, but not lots.

As we all know, most people are not very aware of the issue, and the six chapters get them up to speed where you are.

I've shared a lot here on DU, but there is some material in Chapter 7 you haven't seen, and a few surprises that will get tongues wagging in Chapter 8. Nothing huge, but in my opinion, Chapter 8 is a fun read.

Total is 14 chapters.

Amazon probably just has to get one database talking to another.

Barnes & Noble- the local store told me long ago that they only deal with certain publishers. David was not on their list. At least, that is what I was "told."

However, you can certaily lobby the local, independent stores to carry it. Which is ANOTHER activism action.

Someone asked me who should we send books to. I think that's up to the individual, but here's a list of people I think need the book:

Robert Byrd
Lincoln Chafee (R)-but I think often more on center than far right
Russ Feingold
Bob Graham
Tom Harkin
James Jeffords
John Kerry
Herb Kohl
Patrick Leahy
Carl Levin
John McCain (R)- hey, he as doing the campaign finance reform thing
And he certaily should have a bone to pick with the
Bush gang
Barbara Mikulski
Harry Reid
Olympia Snowe (R) - I've heard she's more center
Ron Wyden

Brian Baird
John Conyers
Norm Dicks
Barney Frank
Rush Holt
Jay Inslee
Patrick Kennedy
Dennis Kucinich
Barbara Lee
Jim McDermott
Ed Markey
Marty Meehan
Ron Paul (R) - but gives the far right a lot of grief
Nancy Pelosi
Maxine Waters
Henry Waxman

Some of you will have better insight. I'm just going though a list and thinking I think this is a person to target, for sure.

Someone asked me who should we send books to. I think that's up to the individual, but here's a list of people I think need the book:

Lincoln Chafee (R)-but I think often more on center than far right
Russ Feingold
Bob Graham
Tom Harkin
James Jeffords
John Kerry
Herb Kohl
Patrick Leahy
Carl Levin
John McCain (R)- hey, he as doing the campaign finance reform thing
And he certaily should have a bone to pick with the
Bush gang
Barbara Mikulski
Harry Reid
Olympia Snowe (R) - I've heard she's more center
Ron Wyden

Brian Baird
John Conyers
Norm Dicks
Barney Frank
Rush Holt
Jay Inslee
Patrick Kennedy
Dennis Kucinich
Barbara Lee
Jim McDermott
Ed Markey
Marty Meehan
Ron Paul (R) - but gives the far right a lot of grief
Nancy Pelosi
Maxine Waters
Henry Waxman

Some of you will have better insight. I'm just going though a list and thinking I think this is a person to target, for sure.

42. Then you can put me down
for Tom Lantos. My senators are already covered, but I think it would be a good idea to send a copy to California SoS Kevin Shelley. Do you? Supposedly he had this great task force on the issue with David Dill, Kim Alexander, Rebecca Mercuri and people from the other side. I hope he would consider the book if I sent him a copy.

43. letter suggestions
From my perspective, copies should get to everyone from congresscritters to county council members. If possible, it would be nice to see some sort of registered-user accessible check-off form on the bbv.com site that went from national to state to county to city level officials who are being sent books. Or even a blog-type report where users could use a "find" search to see if their intended

Some sort of form letter to accompany the book is helpful, but personal letters are better. My view is that highlighting the verifiability issue is central.

"Dear ----, I hope you read this book. I am very worried that any problems with these paperless touchscreen-voting machines will mean that we can never know if votes are counted accurately. If I cannot even see my ballot, how can I know it is filled out in a way that reflects my choices? And if a machine fails to work properly, how do we get the honest numbers unless there are real ballots to compare them to?

"And there are LOTS of problems that can happen. Just skim through Chapter Two for a start. When a machine reports more votes than voters we know something went wrong, but without a voter-verified paper ballot, what can we do about it? There are all sorts of worst-case scenarios one can imagine, but how can voters be assured that no accident or crime has has happened if there is no way to tell if the numbers coming out of the machine have anything to do with the votes going in?"

"Please look into these qustions and let me know how you see them."

Signed with name, address etc.

Or something like that, for what it's worth. (My assumption is that they are more likely to respond to questions from constituents than answers or unfunded commands.)

Something's weird about Chapter 3 -- it's the shortest chapter, no graphics, but takes a really long time to load. Anyways....

47. Yep, Everybody, and Update
Yes, by all means, send to all you can. Asking to send to Congress was never meant to imply not to send to state and local people, or anyone else who should be backing this cause- like, oh...Common Cause?
It was meant to get books in the hands of the people who can and should be into this issue RIGHT NOW.

Individual letters are always better. However, I was trying to come up with a way that didn't overburden our already busy publisher, cut down on postage by having the books sent directly, and inform the congress types why they just received the means to save democracy.

I see that the bbv.com site is down at the moment.
You can still pledge to order the book for a legislator.
If it remains down, I will give you Plan Nine contact information for ordering. However, right now, I'd just give David time to deal with the problem.

I can imagine little things like this will crop up for a while. You know, the very system they like to PR as secure enough to vote on? That can't be disabled and fiddled with? (Sarcasm intended)

By no means does pledging to send to congress mean to not send elsewhere. It's just giving them a reminder that, oh, democracy actually means something to us here in the masses.

And, hey, if we can get the whole senate covered, at the least, that might qualify for a news release. (hint)

I had intended to buy about 10.....all I can afford......one of those retirees on fixed and small income.
Not sure how I want to handle this....buy from Amazon or David. Will wait a couple of days to see what is best. The book is not printed yet.
But you can definitely put me down for my congresscritter, Patrick Tiberi and one Ohio Sen, Mike DeWine. I have no faith in Voinovich ever doing anything for anyone but his corporate cronies. Would be a big waste of money.

67. Book List Update- Buy a Book, Save Democracy
dmr- You pick your congress people to send to. I'm just trying to keep a list of who is already covered. Send to your own state's senators and reps, or pick some you think might do something.

As suggested, and I was wrong to do this without asking, I am now keeping the list sans who is pledging to send books. IF you'd rather I keep names on the list, I go back to that. I was just using DU screen names. I have that information and can add it back on, but perhaps some will prefer to PM me and let me add their reps to the "already pledged" list that way.

this is a great and very 'do-able' project.

perhaps a thread in a slower forum like the Meeting Room or Activism would be more appropriate.

you could always float:

BBV2congress: 17 more House members! 20 Senators left!!

in GD with a link....

just a thought.
