17. Vivisimo is the BEST!
I do a lot of research for my job. I rely solely on Vivisimo. Plus, they're in the Pittsburgh area - a spinoff of Carnegie-Mellon University.

It simultaneously runs your search in several of the best search engines, including Google.

as well as puerile, to call it "dogpile". Who wants to be reminded of a pile of dog sh*t - any sh*t - every time they make a search. I'm as gross as the next man, but this is elementary.

Four-letter words don't normally convey the meaning attached to them, in the way that, say, the latin words used in medicine for the genitalia do. But suffix "dog" with "pile" and it's graphic -schoolboy humorous the first time, but afterwards...?

7. Well, it's not a dogshit reference...
A dogpile is when a bunch of people pile on top of each other -- thus, the analogy is to a bunch of search engines, all piled on top of each other.

Sheesh! Get your mind out of the gutter!

12. I assumed the point of the question was

to avoid Google on political grounds. If so - and I'm perhaps wrong again - the object would be defeated using dogpile.

I've been wanting to use another search engine, because they're big-time corporatists who may well take over from Microsoft (or plain take them over), according to newspaper reports.

And by the way, thanks for the suggestions, folks.

8. teoma.com
As opposed to displaying the results by the number of hits they get and other things that can (and always do) get taken advantage of by webmasters to get thier site on the first page, it displays the results based on the relevancy of your search term. It's great for finding specific information.

13. www.metacrawler.com; www.mamma.com
also www.profusion.com and www.treEZy.com....both I think, mostly for genealogy

not all of them come up with the same info

I use any and all I can find for genealogy and other topics

when you hunt something with metacrawler, look at the different places the info has been found......there are places there like teoma, gigiblast, etc

basically, look at every one you can find.......it's like checking bibliographies; no one has everything available in the internet

16. Since they pulled their heads out of their asses
and returned to concentrating on search, Altavista is pretty good nowadays. One distinction they have from Google is that they seem to retain their caches longer. So if you're looking for something you know you saw way back when and Google doesn't turn it up, Altavista often will.
