Have we heard from all the DUers in the path of Katrina?
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 05:52 PM by Generic Other
People we have heard from either directly or indirectly:
Funkybutt--said he was safe last night (sorry, didn't get the link)

merh--Merh has called. She is safe but has lost everything. Literally.

ripley--got power restored and is okay

Do any Duers know of others?

I'm really worried about her. But she said they were going inland to her parents place.

They probably have no power.

Or is it other family that she has in Port Arthur? I'm doubting that though, because then she'd have power and be able to post. I hope they're all ok.

37. Some good news
I found the website for the Monteleone Hotel and called their 800 number. The lady that answered was not in NO --- but I asked her if she had information on the guests that were staying in the hotel during the hurricane. She said that the reports are that no guests have been injured and that the hotel sustained very little damage.
The phone number is 800-535-9595

website is:
http://www.hotelmonteleone.com/hotel/info.html
(phone number at bottom of page)

She did not have any guest names

23. Still waiting to hear from Frustrated_Lefty
his wife was waiting to be omitted into the ER in N.O. because she couldn't keep down food or fluids (sounded to me like a severe panic attack, but who knows). FL decided to stay with his two children and dog even though the hospital wouldn't allow them to stay there. Some of us begged and pleaded for him to take his wife and family and leave for another hospital in a safe city, but he said that she wouldn't allow them to go-she insisted on waiting at the N.O. hospital, and wanted her family close by at home. I'm still having sleepless nights over it. I know many here insisted that it was a very "personal decision" that was his alone to make, but as a hurricane survivor myself (of a MUCH LESS powerful storm) I strongly disagree when there's children involved (hurricanes are terrifying beyond words) and a mandatory evacuation. God, I hope they survived.

27. I just got my power back
I'm in Baton Rouge and our city has, literally, turned into a shelter. So many people have lost everything.N.O. is 80% under water and the Gov.just said they're thinking about clearing out the entire city for months so they can go in and clean up and check everything out.All the bridges have to be checked for safety. The Causeway is totally destroyed, more levees are breaking.the water is still rising in NO.Anothe levee broke this morning. They'r trying hard to close the breeches, but the water is so strong.
I was volunteering the last couple of days at a shelter,3 nurses and 2 techs have lost their homes and don't know when they can go back to see what they can save. They're all worked in a nursinghome, with Alzheimers patients and it was so hard on those old people.I'm going back tonight so they can get some sleep.
I cannot tell y'all how grateful I am that every tree that came down spared my house and my life and how I feel for everyone from NO.I
have two young people staying with me right now, they lost their house and everything in it.

40. I think my Grandma's house in Waveland, MS is history
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 08:02 PM by gulfcoastliberal
My mom was over there since she is 81 has been have heart problems. Waveland is right next to Bay St Louis, where the Hwy 90 bridge to Longbeach was destroyed. I feel so bad for her. She lived there 60 years. As soon as the roads are passable I'm gonna try to get over there and see what happened. Her house was one block up from the Gulf. I've heard that Coleman Ave and Nicholson Ave are totally wiped out. Those roads are parallel to Hillcrest Ave, where my Grandma's house is/was. Here in Pensacola we lost power untill 5 minutes ago.

Edit: Mom & Grandma are safe in Gulf Breeze, FL.

Also, I think thousands have died. Here in Pensacola after Ivan they totally under-reported the # of fatalities after Ivan. I don't understand why, unless to try to prevent people from leaving permanently or something. My GFs brother is a firefighter and he said hundreds died, while the media said something like 20.

His post about why he wasn't leaving -- wife in the hospital, couldn't just take the kids and leave her there -- just touched me.

God I hope he is okay. Please anyone post if you hear something about him.

92. From centrral Mississippi....My 1st post since June 12th!
Edited on Wed Aug-31-05 11:37 PM by Rowdyboy
Hi, guys! I was locked out of DU due to virus problems on June 12th and finally, tonight, am back online. We're incredibly lucky to have electricity (90% of our county and 80% of the state doesn't). Also, we don't need to boil water, which is a major concern in Jackson, just a few miles to our south. We have a couple of friends who are refugees staying in our guest room after 2 days with no electricity/no water in their home to our south.

We have it easy. Good friends, electricity, fresh water, beer, food etc. For us, its no problem. But for so many others, this nightmare is just beginning.

It's good to be back. I missed you all terribly. Thanks for caring......Steve

95. I'm really astounded that we've been so lucky....
I'm 15 miles north of Jackson. Madison, which is about five mile north of Jackson and 10 miles south of me, supposedly took a very hard hit.

Gas lines are pretty bad, bottled water/bread is hard to find, but-otherwise-my microcosm is doing well. Even our hurricane refugee guests have been able to relax a little (air-conditioning and fresh water make a BIG difference when the temp tops 95 degrees)

98. HeeBGBz called from Gulfport!!!She is ok! She helped seal, it was shot.
Didn't talk to her personally, my cell was off (forgot to turn it on) but her message said to say HI!!!
Everything is devastated, but she and the house she stayed in to ride out the storm survived.
I saw a video of a woman throwing water on seal yesterday. Maybe that was her.
Anderson Cooper said the seals were from the Aquarium,
HeeBGBz said she threw water on the seal for 3 hours but that a policeman came by and just shot it.

105. I don't post that much but I am down on the AL Gulf Coast.
We have some damage to our house, but otherwise OK. Husband in military is activated to help. We have entire towns wiped out on the coast down here. No gas available and people are getting into fights at gas stations and disaster relief stations. They had to post NG at the gas and relief stations because of the violence. Now the gas is completely gone from what I understand. I have about a quarter of a tank left in my car. It is really crazy down here and the mood is sort of frightening. There is a lot of desperation here so I can only imgaine what it must be like the further west you go. We are under a curfew because of the looting.

I really pray for the DUers along the coast in MS and over in LA. I know some of the AL NG have finally gotten the official word to head their way (have been sitting and waiting for dumbass * and co. to send them!!!) Some will stay here because of the horrible destruction on the west coastline of AL.

113. Another kick for Frustrated Lefty and the little girl
and anyone else that we're still waiting to hear about.

My heart is heavy about Frustrated Lefty. I really only got to know him Sunday, when I responded to his thread about why he felt he had to stay and we began posting and pm'ing back and forth.

I completely undertand why he made the decision he did, even though I wanted him to take his children and pet(s) and go as far as he could. Sometimes there simply are no good choices to make. Sometimes the situation is, as the Louisiana Governor keeps putting it--untenable.

I very much want him and his family to be ok. If anyone hears anything or knows his name, please pm me or post here.

As for Dylan Garcia's daughter...my heart aches for those parents. I cannot imagine an hour going by without news of my children, let alone days now. I don't know how they do it, but they remain in my prayers for strength, courage, peace, and good news.

And if there are any others still missing that I should include in my prayers and meditations, please let me know.
