about the flattening of the buildings.

i.e. deliberate and preventable vs. inevitable

6. No. The devastation is equally horrific, just has a different
cause. The effects are still the same. Disaster is disaster, whether manmade or natural. The effects of Katrina contain probably elements of both--a natural disaster exacerbated by the works of man.

9. I believe the mayor of Biloxi said that, right?
The man's city has been flattened. He's groping for an analogy. Frankly, I find all of this taking offense and being PC about what people who have lost everything, including family, probably, are in pain are saying -- offensive!

And now I'm going to hide this thread.

10. The devastation looks similar from the air, that's all ...
I wouldn't compare a natural event (storm) with an aggressive war action (bomb).

People are also saying NO looks like Baghdad.

But who the hell said "Hiroshima"? How can anyone begin to compare what nature does and what people do?

In considering the aftermath of each event in terms of loss of property and infrastructure -- destruction is destruction.

of everything in its wake.

if it was simply a poorly chosen phrase by the governor then MSM should let it slide and not repeat it

13. Totally. David Schuster spinned it nicely, but
there IS no comparison. HAving said that, the devastation is horrifying. No homes, no jobs, no roads, water, food...

16. I agree... I don't minimize the destruction, it is horrific and i have
friends there that may have lost their home, they don't know yet. but I wouldn't compare a drowning death to a cold blooded murder

14. Yes and No
The graphic impact is comparable in its stunning totality.
The human tragedy of Hiroshima can not be equaled but we can not quantify the lose based on numbers.

Comparing nuclear weapons to ANYTHING nature can throw at us is
ludicrous.

The same dumb thing was said about the effects of Mt. Saint Helens
25 years ago, and it annoyed me then too. The area around the
the volcano, though different, is recovering nicely. Nature heals
itself.

olberman mentioned it...
it was Haley Barbour the Gov - who said something to the effect that it LOOKED like Hiroshima - even tho I hate that pos - Olberman didn't think he meant it should be compared to Hiroshima's casualties...

31. I thought they gauged it as having the force of so many
nuclear bombs, kind of like they gauged the eruption of Mt. St. Helens the same way. I didn't really hear anyone compare it to Hiroshima unless they what they meant was that the force of the bombs they are talking about were comparable to the Hiroshima bomb. I mean I think it was meant to be explanatory.
