Blanco is on talking about how airlines cancelled outgoing flights which LEFT a lot of people stranded. Caller is saying his flight was cancelled..no rental cars were available..

Larry asked him about looting. The caller stated that he saw SOME lootig but MOST of what he saw was people looking for food. He stated there IS no food and water where he is and that people are hungry.

This is the first time in a year that I've missed television. I'd like to see what's going on, even if I'm only seeing one tiny facet of the problem.

So much is happening that we really don't have a clue. Every person in the disaster zone has a different story. We can't just lump them into categories like "too poor to leave," "too stupid to leave," "looters," etc.

I would like to see an end to flame wars over the hurricane. What has happened has happened. What will happen will happen. Now, let's see how we can help, shall we?

3. How Could A Hotel Be Out Of Food?

I stayed at Hotel Monaco before. It's about 2 blocks outside the Quarter, in the Central Business District. I'm wondering how a 4 Star Hotel could not have food or liquids? I'm assuming it's not full, but wouldn't they have enough for at least a few days on hand?

One story I found interesting was Brian Williams on TV this morning said when he went to bed last night, his hotel was safe and dry. But when he woke up, there was two feet of water in the lobby.

that most of the stuff the hotel has would probably be perishable; for sit-down dinners. The drinks are probably soft drinks that mix soda syrup and carbonated water. There is probably very little that could just be eaten straight out unless it was fresh fruit or vegetables. And that's probably been contaminated.

Other than the bagged snacks at the gift shops, and bottled water from hotel fridges, hotels are not going to be the food mecca they would seem.

6. While I agree we need to help, one way we can help is to start

holding our government accountable for the very REAL incompetence they demonstrate with PLANNING or NOT THINKING of catastrophes. We also need to start holding our fellow citizens accountable for their voting patterns. Not even a YEAR after the San Diego fires, the community voted AGAINST funding emergency services even though many people would not have lost their homes and the losses would not have been so severe if they didn't let the lease on their water dropping helicopters lapse.

This is the ill effects of the Republican "starve government to feed the rich" echo chamber.

My best friend died last year in a plane crash during a thunderstorm that was approximately 1/800th the ferocity of Katrina. I don't think that not filling up a bunch of planes that MIGHT make it out is a fair criticism.

What if only 1 out of 50 flights crashed?
How about 2?
How about 25?

Do you really think people would be looking at the bright side and saying, "Gee, half the flights managed to get out of the city. That's good, isn't it?"

Planes don't fly in dangerous weather. Neither do Helicopters. If they did, then there would have been a bunch flying around Monday morning, and there weren't. It's comparable to sending buses to rescue people from roads covered in 15 feet of water. It's foolish to do so.

IIRC, the rain/wind didn't even start until Sunday afternoon/evening.

Still, there were no military troop transports that could get people to a safe haven, like DFW? Oh, that's right, they are playing in the sandbox.

They're explaining why people remained in New Orleans - because they were stranded from cancelled flights and all the rental cars were taken. Had the majority of the LANG been at home with their trucks, of course, they could've had more groups evacuated. But they're in Iraq. With those non-armored trucks. Getting shot at and blown up. Meanwhile, people are stranded in a disaster zone in New Orleans.

Not everyone drives. Not everyone has a car. Some people had no choice but to remain because they had no ground transportation out. Where were the trucks? Where were the city buses? Where was Junior? Oh, right... He was having photo ops in California. His father sent 25,000 NG troops to Florida for Hurricane Andrew. The son sent 3,000 to Louisiana. What a leader. :eyes:

But the "Compassionate" conservatives would shoot someone, because they scrounged some food when they are hungry, tired, cold, scared, lost everything they own and were abandoned because they couldn't afford to leave.
