since it will be transparent when they do the body counts on the ones they couldn't get out in time.:(

7. I saw earlier where they may be there for up to a week if they can't
... relocate them.

If that does end up being the case they better come up with some type of sanitation system for them ASAP.

10. The Governor said tonight that the conditions in the SD were
deteriorating rapidly and will be unsustainable in 1-2 days. People are getting sick. There is no sanitation. Water lines are contaminated. Goal is to try to keep people with food and water. They have to find a place to put these people.
She said that they will start evacuating the sick, then the children and the women and the babies.
She was choking back the tears.

This isn't going to end well.

8. you know, of course, there has to be so much SHIT going on in that
building. so many people in an altered state of worry/frustration/exhaustion and just plain FEAR. i would have already either totally shut down or be in heart racing "the planes going DOWN" mode. fight or flight. and the people there haven't been treated well by the security who are equally as worried/frustrated/exhausted.

where the fuck is bush? freakin dragging his feet, taking his time getting back to washington. he's not even acting like this is an emergency.

12. The Governor said that
during the evacuations, many were brought in boats and sometimes there wasn't room for the entire family and some had to be left behind.
She said that tensions are high because they haven't met up with the family members that were left behind.

13. can you IMAGINE the smell??
the bathrooms are failing (sewers backed up)..No one can bathe.. no running water .. no A/C..

I know it's better than drowning, but the Dome should have been a staging area for getting people OUT...not corralling all the poor people in one location and tryihng to figure out what to do after they are all jammed into that place:(

9. Does Bush 'feel their pain"?
"I feel your pain" was expressed by a Dem president.

Many citizens of Asheville have valued Nor'lens:City of the Saints. Does the current administration value one of the most unique cities in the US---a city of exceptional cuisine, beignets, and hot nights of watching the tug boats on the Mississippi?

By all indications, they do not. Moreover, Democratic states are punished and Republican states are treated extravagantly. FL, under Governor Jeb Bush received massive funding for hurricane relief in 2004, prior to the presidential election.

Contrarily, in Louisiana, requests for flood mitigation funds were rejected by FEMA this summer. The levee that had a two-block wide hole that allowed Lake Ponchatrain to flow into the city was a high priority project.

North Carolina also has a Democratic governor. It also is a state (remember the dam that busted above Asheville that affected Canton, in particular) that is regularly threatened by hurricanes and floods. FEMA recently refused the state's request to buy backup generators for emergency support facilities. And the budget cuts have halved the funding for a mitigation program that saved an estimated $8.8 million in recovery costs in three eastern North Carolina communities alone after 1999's Hurricane Floyd.

Money for the war, means less money for the people back home.

Asheville, NC

15. Have we made the tax cuts for the rich, permanent yet?
I just wrote a ten paragraph rant and just deleted it. It's nothing different than what anyone is feeling these days.

That POS had better NOT even utter a solitary word about making those tax cuts permanent! :grr: In fact, Congress should immediately rescind those obscene tax giveaways to the Greediest among us!

33. Thanks... maybe next time I won't,
but like most of us, I'm so ripping mad. Congress' ass should be held to the fire so to speak. Large organizations at this point should be directing the heat at the community level of government at this point, it seems it's all we have at this point, the jack ass in charge is unreachable, even for the Mayor of NO. Ah... just damn.

Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 11:50 PM by SofaKingLiberal
Didn't we evacuate something like 7K people from Saigon in less than a day by copters?

Bush needs to get off his fucking ass and make this happen.

Now, they are half a world away, fighting unnecessary war.

Support in place when there is no sanitation is a terrible idea.

Poor decisions risk generating thousands of sick people and more deaths...

21. There has always been a wide disparity
Mayor Nagin -- 20-25k on the first day
Cmdr of NG who performed security -- 20-25k on the first day

Everyone else, 7-10k.

Maybe the count being reported is now the correct one.

22. A nightmare situation
I remember having a sick feeling watching the people line up to go in there.

Let's just hope that the structure itself is sound enough to hold as the water undermines its foundations, until the helicopters or rescue boats can get in there.

23. I'll Bet There's More Inside
Remember, this isn't a Saints football game...where 50,000 would sit comfortably in that dome...in the seating area. These people are spread out not only throughout the Superdome...they've opened up conference rooms and other facilities inside as well as the basketball arena across the street that holds another 20,000 seating.

Certainly it's gotta be a living hell in there with limited food, water, sanitation and the uncertainty of what's going on in the outside world. Those people are going to need to be "boated" out of there in the next couple days just on the sanitation issue alone. Where do they go? I'd sure love to see a tent city set up where Camp Casey used to be...remind the manchild for years and months to come about the victims of his incompetency.

24. I feel so badly for them
The pain of being sick and having your home destroyed and having to live in what is essentially an unplanned, disorganized refugee camp is unimaginable to me. Pray for them if you are the praying kind.

WDSU reporter just said tens of thousands still in their homes...

I'm guessing most found their way to the Superdome, some drowned overnight, and some are waiting for rescue...

28. the logistics for finding
shelter for all these people has to in itself be a nightmare. Surely the gov has some military base near that can be used. During Andrew large tents were put up to help population. Where are the buses and transports to help get them out. I am angry that the Fed gov is not moving fast enough and the situation only gets worse. I"m sure NO gov is doing all it humanly can, but damn things have got to move faster.Where the hell is our federal gov? This is like bush's dad did after Andrew, dragged his ass for too long.
