With water pressure dwindling, the bathrooms are filthy. Barrels overflow with trash. Anxious to see what happened to their homes, a large group of refugees gathered by barricades near an exit and demanded that they be allowed to leave. They were told it is not yet safe.

They are being held prisoners. They are not free to leave.

That doesn't count the many inner rooms of the building including, from what I heard, a fairly large banquet hall as well as the basketball arena across the street that appears to look like it didn't take a lot of damage...that place seats 20,000. So, in essence these two building should hold 70,000 seated...and that doesn't count the large arcades and inner workings of those buildings.

The critical problem is the sanitation, food and water. There's generators that keep the lights on and it's been reported there's medical facilities...and a constant airlift of injured from the Superdome. Yes, it's hell inside, but it sure beats what's outside. These people have no place to go and no one ever envisioned these facilities to be used for long term shelters...thinking they'd help weather the storm and those inside would be on their way.

Here's hoping there are boats on the way that can get to the Superdome where busses can't and have fresh water, food and sanitation aboard...getting those people out of there. Hopefully Governor Blanco (who discussed this plan last night) coordinates this mass exodus. The city is going to have to be evacuated totally. There'll be plenty of time for finger pointing once the situation stabilizes.

18. I give you that it's not ideal accomodations...

but they are safer there than anywhere else in NOLA right now. They will be removed to a better location AFTER the people who are trapped on their roofs and in their attics are taken care of. Simple priorities.

As to the soldiers with guns running the place, probably not the worst idea. Sorry, but with the potential for a riot so great there has to be some kind of authority.

but the fact is they are SAFE in the superdome. They're not going to drown, and the structure is stable. All available manpower is going to help people who are in imminent danger.

those needs aren't going to be met much better outside of the dome. There is no potable water to be had in the New Orleans area, and much of the flood water is infested with sewer and petroleum.

Yes, the issue of the dome is a problem but for the moment, it's down the list.

I'm not saying any one thing is worse than the other. I DO think that being in the dome probably has just as many disadvantages (just different ones!) than being outside it.

Just hope all those people in the dome manage to stay calm. As the hours go by and they aren't evacuated the chances of that calm holding will grow slimmer and slimmer, I am sad to say.

Superdome: Toilets don't work, water on the floor (like the rest of the city)

Superdome: people are hungry, but relief groups are working to bring in food and water
