Don't these things have ANY identifiers on them? Isn't Condi's name painted on the side or something? I cannot believe that A) we can't find an outside identifier, or even a placque on the door saying "OILCO." and B) that no one is claiming ownership of an entire oil rig. Maybe it wasn't insured? WTF? NOLA appears to be becoming a microcosm of every bad thing about BushCo, incompetence and greed. Unfreakingbelievable.

Of COURSE the rig is marked and has an owner who is, presumably, upset that it isn't where it should be. I'd think its owner knows exactly where it is.

5. More Irony About The Casinos

Who was the Einstein that pushed through the "off-shore" gambling law that turned those huge gambling boats into large projectiles during a hurricane? We have "Riverboat" gambling here in Illinois and I know it's in other states as well, but we're not sitting dead-red in a hurricane region.

The genius on CNNServative laments on the economic hit the lack of people losing their shirts will bring, yet you don't hear a discussion of how this state, along with many others, have become heavily reliant and corrupted by the gaming industry. Then he says, he has "word" that the law will be changed to permit REAL casinos on shore. Duh!!!

Riverboat casinos are the only ones capable of moving AWAY from a hurricane, making them the ONLY gambling establishments that don't contribute to the mess when it's clean-up time.

If one doesn't make it out in time or is moored when it should have been moved out, that isn't a problem with the riverboat casino idea in general.

13. These Boats Came Ashore...

I had heard several were pulled into bays and coves to try to shelter them from the storm, but once that huge surge came in (20 feet or higher) those boats, like barges and other vessels were swept inland. If these "boats" are like the ones I see here in the Midwest, I can't see them being very "sea-worth" as to being able to ride out a storm of that magnitude.

There wasn't much time to move out...this storm really didn't show a true "track" until Saturday and I firmly believe the power of this storm was greatly underestimated. Look at that off-shore rig that came in...that had to be several miles in the gulf...if that couldn't survive the wind and waves, a top-heavy gambling boat sure wouldn't stand much of a chance, would it?

While the boats being in the river or bay may not "clutter" up the shore, the traffic it generates sure does.

It's such a stupid law to permit gambling ONLY if it's off-shore to appease the fundies...we still have no accounting for all the loss of life in these areas but the special interests and big business will rule the day in the end.

I misinterpreted your post. I don't agree that riverboat casinos are inherently any more dangerous during natural disasters than land-based casinos.

I do, however, agree that allowing "offshore" gambling while restricting land-based casinos is just silly.
