Letter to Times from Canada: Wake up, America! You're no beacon!

To the Editor:

You note that having Judith Miller remain in jail "is an embarrassment to a country that is supposed to be revered around the world for its freedoms."

Surely it is time, once and for all, for Americans to disabuse themselves of the idea that their country is revered around the world. Leaving aside Guantánamo Bay, the invasion of Iraq, the high incarceration rate, the death penalty (until recently applied even to the mentally disabled) and, yes, Judith Miller, America is only one of many democracies in the modern world.

Take a look north of the border, for example. We're free here, too.

7. Out of the 192 countries in the world, 62% have some form

of democracy as their form of government. And - contrary to the beliefs of most Americans - they even have running water in Europe these days.
