People are leaving work to rush to the gas stations.

I tried to pull up the Atlanta Journal Constitution, but it says "page not available"

A supply shock is what has happened when the supply of a good is quickly cut off. In the case of the potential shortages the supply shock is caused by not being able to get oil transported because of the damage caused by the storm.

FYI: In the Soviet Union shortages were caused by production not being able to adequately meet demand at the costs being charged.

(WSB Radio) -- Governor Perdue has announced that the State of Georgia is waving certain gasoline regulations to help minimize gas price hikes and supply issues in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) is waiving state requirements for higher additive gasoline required during the summer months until September 15. Waiving this requirement will allow gasoline suppliers to bring available gasoline into Georgia to help alleviate shortages and keep prices to a minimum.

"While the state's requirement for cleaner burning gasoline is an important part of the plan to improve air quality in metropolitan Atlanta, this emergency has occurred late in the smog season and easing our requirements will help ensure an adequate supply of gasoline for Georgians," says EPD Director Carol Couch.

The Governor's Office and EPD will work with suppliers to bring available gas to the state as quickly as possible and to ensure that prices reflect its lower cost.

Metro Atlanta drivers are facing the possibility of paying considerably more than $3 a gallon for gas by Labor Day — if they can get it at all.

The two pipelines that bring gasoline and jet fuel to the region are down — powerless to pump as Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc on electrical infrastructure.


The metro Atlanta region generally has about a 10-day supply of gasoline in inventory, said BP spokesman Michael Kumpf. The pipelines have been down for two days.

Alpharetta-based Colonial Pipeline Co., cut off from its suppliers on the Gulf Coast, is now pumping gas from huge storage tanks, many in Powder Springs. Whether electric power can be restored to the pipeline pumps before supplies run out is "the great uncertainty ... that hangs over all of us," said Daniel Moenter, a spokesman for Marathon Ashland Petroleum, a major supplier of metro Atlanta's fuel.

Some suppliers are rationing gasoline to retailers, so some stations may already be near empty.

With supplies uncertain, oil companies and larger wholesalers are ratcheting up prices, partly to slow demand. Some local wholesalers already are paying 65 to 80 cents per gallon more than they paid three days ago. That kind of price increase will hit the pumps within a few days.

On Monday, the scare talk was about prices hitting $3 a gallon at the pump. By Tuesday, that line had changed for the worse, said Tex Pitfield, president of Saraguay Petroleum Corp., which delivers gas to retailers.

"Depending on how much damage has actually taken place and the time involved in getting the infrastructure up and running, is $4 a gallon out of the question? Not necessarily," he said.

Got lots of dried food. Rice, beans, some canned veg, canned meat. We're close location wise, both in L'ville. If ya run short, drop me a PM and I will share my food stock with ya. If it gets real bad, at least we will be able to eat.

I doubt this shortage will continue though, but gas will probably never see less than $2/gallon again, ever.

CNBC (Financial) was reporting on that too earlier today. They were saying that the pipelines were not severely damaged, but that there was no power (in various spots) to make the pumps on the pipeline work. They were talking about getting generators to those pumps, but that it would be tough because EVERYBODY is looking to purchase generators at the moment.

Sounds like somebody's gonna hafta eminent domain some of those suckers to the pipeline before gasoline riots erupt, no???

There are several other stations in that area -- all had long lines.

One station even took their prices down - tho I'm thinking they are just trying to figure out how much more to jack them up.
