Bush's explanation was that "there are bad folks too," Hughes said. "I said, you know, it just sort of sounds like they're the folks next door, and these are trained killers.
"He must have detected some hesitation on my part about telling him this, because he pulled me aside later and he said, 'I want you to always, always tell me whenever I screw up.'"
She cited that quality of "welcoming disagreement and wanting truth" as a strong point in his leadership style.

At a news conference with Gov. Rick Perry, Hughes said she supported the GOP drive in Texas to redraw congressional districts in an effort to give Republicans more of an edge. On that subject, she emphasized that she was speaking for herself, "not as a White House official."
Asked who her congressman is, she responded that it's U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, an Austin Democrat, adding, "I don't believe he frequently represents my point of view." Later, she telephoned to say her congressman is actually U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith, R-San Antonio — although she said she believes it used to be Doggett.
