I'll bet that just the boats here on Long Island Sound and the Connecticut River burn several hundred thousand gallons every weekend.

Multiply that by the rest of the country, if you will...

4. I don't see how not using gas here is going to help anything anywhere

else. It's not like it will be picked up here in the north and sent south. The time to conserve was long ago. I am now of the mind that only pain and suffering will force the energy issue. We need to do something else. We could use electric cars tomorrow, but people don't ask for them. Expensive and rare gasoline will do the trick. I am going boating.

Some people have to have them (like the power company to reach lines in the woods), but most of the folks around here (NW Arkansas) only buzz around on them. I'd like to have all of them locked up.

I bet the fuel consumption by these vehicles would match the fuel consumption of the boats you described.

BTW, hello New England! I visited there (New Haven CT) for the first time this spring and fell in love with the area!

Or, the prices rise, and people economize on their own.

I think a better choice would be to put a tax on it - encouraging economization, and using that tax to give everyone an energy credit, to spend as they see fit in the name of conservation or otherwise dealing with higher energy prices.
