Did you look at the rules of marriage, divorce, etc?
The women of Iraq lived in a very secular society prior to our invasion.... this is a step back to the middle ages for them!

I am also aware that it's regressive for the status of women in civil society in Iraq.

And I am still confused as to what you are surprised about. I knew that Islamic law is not generally highly liberating to women.

But once the crowd writing the constitution decided they were going to be an IslamicRepublic, the rest of this pretty well follows.

You want to be apalled that they decided to be an Isslamic Republic, be apalled at that. You want to be apalled that Dear Leader and the puppet masters support a theocratic state, be apalled at that. But don't be apalled that religious law is male centric, repressive and theocratic.

6. Look I am appalled at the notion of a theocracy

which cripples women's rights in a country that didn't exist before. Frankly, I as well as many others are not as aware of the intricacies of islamic law as you are! I knew that the provisions existed, I was just unaware of each and every provision.

Having a theocracy in any country, including this one which is what some in this country want, is a travesty and has nothing to do with true democracy.

Frankly, to be honest, I find your comments a bit grating!

Not everyone is as steeped in the muslim fundamentalist tradition as you are!

5. Freedom's already BEEN marching

the deterioration of women's rights and conditions in Iraq since the invasion is frightening. "Misery gangs" roam the streets and rape women at will. Honor killings are commonplace, when before they were a very rare occurrence. Women are not safe outside, and are certainly in danger if outside without proper covering. None of this happened before the war.

and I think people need to be aware of what the neocons have brought to the women of iraq.... frankly, this website should be broadcast over on free republic or on Fox message boards.

8. I did not mean to be grating

and I apologize for being a bit knowledgeable about Islamic law. I'm a North Carolina lawyer, and I happend to have represented a number of folks who are citizens of a number of Middle Eastern countries. So I get a chance to learn a lot about things.

Unfortunately, I lurk among the freeps from time to time. Most of what I have sen over theire is praises for Dear Leader and how this is proof that the Iraqis are forming their own democracy, not ours, blah, blah, blah. I'm not sure that you can shock a freeper with anything other than taking private property.

I totally agree that theocracy is a lousy idea for government, especially ours. I don't like the idea in Iraq, either. The theocracy in Iran seems to produce a crumbling of control of the ayatollahs, and maybe that is what is destined to happen-a breakdwon of religious control in favor of a secular state.
