Within 45 Minutes FOX Does a 180 on Looting Coverage
At the beginning of last night's O'Reilly Factor <8/30/05>, substitute host John Kasich questioned FOX News correspondent Jeff Goldblatt about the looting going on in New Orleans. Within 45 minutes the entire tone of the coverage changed.

KASICH: " ... People down there, who have observed this, have been outraged - tell us what you've seen."

At 8:05 PM EDT reporting from the French Quarter Goldblatt answered:

"I have seen that but I wouldn't characterize it as looting. I'd characterize it as survival. I've seen people go into stores.

(Clips on screen showing African-Americans with plastic bags in their hands, a New Orleans Police squad car, a boarded up Foot Locker store.)

"They're taking things but they're going in there and then passing that food out. They say: 'I have to eat and this is the only way I can do so.' On the other hand, like, for example, I heard about a Wal-Mart opening its doors and letting anyone go inside and take anything they want. That's what my hotel manager told me and then I asked him: 'Hey, maybe we should go.' And then they said: 'No. That's obviously for people who need it very much so.' So, I mean, it is a situation of survival right now."

1. If that is the Walmart that Olberman was covering we should let him
know since Countdown made it look like even the cops were looting Walmart.

10. I think you're right...
They can only spew so much hate and evil before it comes back to bite them in their collective ass.

3. Reporters vs anchors
From waht I've watched, the anchors have been idiots, but the reporters that are there have something resembling a clue.

4. Yeah, Bernie Kerick gave them permission to be human
Seriously. He was on some channel this evening around 6pm or so. He actually wasn't that bad; showed compassion for the looters situation.

Pretty bad when the news whores have to take their cues to be human from that guy.

5. Don't worry, Bob Livingston and Hannity started to revert to
the looting thing, with Livingston asking why the Gov. of LA hadn't declared martial law, while MS and AL gov. had in those states...

8. I saw this...
...and thought Goldblatt's Foxbot assimilation must not have been completely successful---traces of truth and integrity were clearly coming through in his reporting. Kasich, immediately recognizing the malfunction, knew just what to do. Fox News Alert, spin cycle on.
Presumably Goldblatt will be sent back to the lab for the needed integrity purge procedures.

12. Are you saying that Fox covered both looters-for-booty *and*
looters-for-survival?

Wow. Who'd have thunk it? Nuance. Acknowledgement of diversity. Non-monolithicity. Contemplating the reality indicated by evidence in photographs.

Much nicer than the simplistic, all-good/all-bad mentality some people have. But then again, I've seen few of the 'all-bad' persuasion, at least here. They've usually been of the "it's always bad, but excusable in some cases" subvariety.
