Poll question: How many miles per year do you have to drive for work or your occupation?

I'm in the 30,000 miles/yr range (that's just "work" miles), and I have to drive a gas guzzling pickup for my business, so man am I screwed.

I just put $20 worth of gas in my truck tonight, and it only took about 14 seconds to do it. OUCH!!

A tax break on gas, proven used for work purposes...i know peopel get tax breaks on clothes/uniforms for their job, so why not gas? I know its never going to happen, but its an idea...

Still have to go out for meetings, but I try to schedule several at a time in the same office so as not to have to take too many trips. I used to travel a lot more in my previous job. I love being able to work from home!

7. Not a lot ...

I've always habitually lived near where I work, some of which comes from living in a small town most of my life. The thought of taking more than fifteen minutes to get to work in the morning horrifies me, mostly because I'm addicted to sleep.

And it's times like these I miss living in that small town. I was working and going to college at one point in that town of about 15,000 people. I generally filled up one week on pay-day, which was weekly, then filled up again three weeks later.

I now fill up about every 10-14 days. My drive to work accounts for about half of my driving in a week. I make one trip to my mother's on weekends, which is most of the other half. The grocery store, my bank, a bread store, and most places where I might eat out or go for recreation are on the road between work and home, so it's not much of an issue.

But I'm one of the lucky ones.

18. This is my goal ...

I was actually all set to move a couple months ago to a house within walking distance of where I work. But, I ended up in one of those "you're good at your job, here's your punishment" sort of deals where I took over operations at another location that is failing badly until a permanent replacement can be found. This place is ten miles from me in the wrong direction (and in the middle of Dumbass Hell) for the move to make sense.

So, that's on hold.

But, when I get back to where I want to be I'll be within walking/biking distance as soon as I can find a place. I need the exercise anyway. Living in OKC has dramatically dropped the amount of time I spend outdoors moving around, and it's starting to affect me.

Only put 8000 miles a year total on the vehicle.

Yes, it's an SUV. It's a 4 cylinder 4 runner and gets about 28 or 29 mpg on average -- mostly city miles. We got it back in '95 and were especially happy to find a 4 cylinder because we knew it would meet our family needs (we do go camping), and also get pretty good gas mileage.

Folks, we must start lobbying for more mass transit and more alternative energy now! We must make the sacrifices now, as it will be much harder later. As if it won't be hard enough now, I know. But it must be done. And we must be willing to pay for it, because the govt sure as hell won't do it for us. Act locally!

she is a right at 20,000 miles a year for her job, it sucks big time, and what makes it worse is standing traffice, not just the mileage itself, but the idle time you have to sit in traffic, that sucks gas also...its not fun, with our added errands i know we are definatly over 30,000 a year total, but 20,000 is about dead on for work mileage, i can't do mine, cause i'm a sub teacher, some days i drive ten miles, other days, 30 or so, so i will just base my wifes mileage...:)

Isn't it though. It's disgusting how fast the "cents" on the top of the pump add up while the "gallons" part moves so slowly on the bottom.

It's 3X as hard trying to stop the pump on an even dollar, it moves so fast.
