Told the boss I am telecommuting all next week. I can do 99% of my job from home managing the people and systems at the center - why drive 40 miles round trip? Companies will hopefully start a push for telecommuting. Out of the several thousand that work in the company in my area an easy 35% could work from home.

Telecommuting is even better tho - great. You'll probably enjoy it more, too!

2. I am driving the mini-van mom left me when she died
No payments, minimum coverage. Figure avg van is 15-20k maybe and I am still ahead of the game since it cost me zero.

3. Oh!
Ok - I know mini vans have huge tanks. Otherwise it sounds like you have an H2 or something!

4. Personally I have only bought one gas guzzler
A jeep. My boss sold it to me dirt cheap and let me make payments - and it was/is in superb condition.

I prefer smaller cars because I like to do a lot of traveling.

In my last car I drove from Ohio to California in late 90's for $88 in gas (one way).

I do want to get a good pickup truck though as there are many times I need things hauled and moved. The mini-van does well enough for that right now though.

With bad credit, even though I make good money, it is hard to get a loan (I got a home loan, but not able to a gas card...go figure). I would buy a hybrid in a second if I could get one because I miss taking my cross country trips.

I planned out a trip for next month. 5000 miles round trip (in a small rental car). At 30mpg, and if gas was 3.50 I would spend almost 600 in gas. If gas stays that price I might do it anyway. Still sucks though!

5. that's funny..
I have a Toyota Corolla - but rent a mini-van for long trips! I like to sleep in the back, and stay at campgrounds or national parks. I like long distance driving, too. This summer I went from Los Angeles to Denver, hitting many of the parks in Utah along the way. It was amazing. 2k miles round trip, cost about $250 in gas - less than flying! And I got to see so many amazing things.
