"I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well," Limbaugh said. "There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."
I've been an Eagles fan since before Randall Cunningham first came into this league (1985). Although African American quarterbacks were few and far between in 1986, the year that Cunningham became their fulltime starter at QB, we heard all that crap back then. And believe me, we did hear it in the Media all the time about whether African American Quarterbacks could make it in the league. When Doug Williams, not only a Superbowl winning QB but MVP of that game, was asked that infamous question of "How long have you been a Black Quarterback" you would have thought that this issue was finally resolved, dead, buried and on to the next subject
But remember, Rush Limbaugh is not the real media, he is the "Media as he interprets it", which is why suddenly this whole issue has been resurfaced again. Rush could have made that same exact statement and dropped off the reference to skin color and still have made an extremely valid point. Maybe the media was giving McNabb too much credit and maybe the Eagles keys to success the past years has been our defense. I think that would have been a valid argument especially since the Eagles have lost some key players on both offense and defense these past 2 years which have hurt their overall play these first 3 game. Our offense isn't protecting McNabb and the Defense isn't stopping the other teams offense.
Since Randall Cunningham first came to Philadelphia back in 1985, the Eagles have almost gotten immune to the whole race thing with Quarterbacks. We had 2 major quarterbacks playing for us in the past 18 years and even in the years between Cunningham and McNabb (1995-99), we had a series of QB attempt to take over including a third African-American QB (Rodney Peete lasted a year). Personally, us Philly fans don't care what color the skin of our quarterback is - we just want one who can win us a Super Bowl.
However, thanks to ESPN we've been able to make a serious dent in the credibility of Rush Limbaugh. He may have 17million listeners but about 2/3rds are hardcore neo-cons 'dittoheads' who actually think this squealer speaks the truth and the other third are liberal thinkers who are probably copying down the names of all his sponsers to boycott. But Rush has always represented the lead shrill of neo-conservatives shrills like Hannity, Savage, Coulter, et al and folks, we've just watched the King take a mighty tumble on a National TV show watched by people who may not have any interests whatsoever in politics but are smart enough to recoginize that the old "Black QB" pandering is just wrong.
