How are the New Orleans suburbs?

I'm curious because I have some distant acquaintances who aren't from the city but the metro area (I don't know exactly where).

Are most of the suburbs flooded out as well or dry but utterly destroyed?

Also, I would assume that other low-lying areas of Southeast Louisiana (rural areas), are utterly devastated and maybe underwater too?

1. Depends on which suburb

If your talking about Metarie, Kenner, or the rest of Jefferson Parish, they are about the same as NOLA.

Also, 2 parishes in lower LA haven't been heard from at all.

St. Tammany (Slidell, Hammond, Mandeville) has areas of complete destruction and areas not touched. Anything south of I-12 is probably severely damaged.

3. What about the...

west bank--Algiers, Belle Chase, Gretna and other communities over there? How 'bout the GNO and Huey P.--damaged or still intact? I was also wondering if the zoo was under water.

4. West Bank is OK at the moment...the Zoo is probably 10 ft deep

I heard that all the animals were chained to their cages and would drown if it got too deep.

they are flooded mostly according to satellite imagery I've seen. Since they are generally wealthier, most likely more people evac'ed and less looting, but still a lot of people on roofs.

The west bank is generally comparitively ok -- although they are not completely out of the woods (there is concern about the levee's breaking). I haven't heard anything on the Heuy P Long, but the toll bridge (Crescent City Connection) is up.

6. Which 'burbs? I heard Slidel was completely wiped out.
