They were shouting at the government this afternoon.

My favorite moment was when Nancy was listening to someone at the Pentagon explain why help was so slow in coming, and he said "Well, their are beauracratic issues involved." She shouted at him in scorn. "Beauracratic issues? People are dying!" So the guy went on about how long it took to respond to emergencies, treating her as though she were basically clueless (this was my first time to see her, so for all Iknow she is). She then cut back to Anderson Cooper with an intro about his record covering disasters in Africa, Sri Lanka and other places abroad.

She and Cooper was very visibly upset, and they did not seem to be acting at all. Grace at one point looked like she was about to cry, then regained control. It was way to subtle to be faked. They are watching the places they grew up loving being treated like this. I actually felt a bond with the two of them, as though for the first time a newsperson actually seemed to understand what I did.

that is tracked doesn't exactly qualify as "unanticipated." Bush declared a state of emergency on Saturday. They had time to prepare to move out ASAP.

It doesn't normally take more than HOURS to respond to a hurricane; they don't sneak up on you like earthquakes!!!

But we never were without most of our National Guard, either. :grr:

I remember a lot of near misses and direct hits and glancing blows. I remember huddling in small hallways and feeling the house breath and listening to the rumbling freight train sounds flying over my roof. And I remember in every case seeing the NG standing on the streets the next morning. Even after the near misses the NG had a presence. Sometimes you just saw their trucks in the shopping center parking lots, but they were there.

I've never seen inaction like this. Never. The South is covered with military bases, full to the brim with military equipment. On the Mississippi Coast there is a Seabee base, a very large Air Force base, and a National Gaurd Armory at the airport. Up the highway there is another National Gaurd base within an hour's drive. There are bases in Florida and Alabama. There is a base in Alexandria, Louisiana, a short distance from New Orleans, and several other large bases around there. There are bases all over Texas.

Those bases have hangers, mess halls, barracks, meeting rooms, even fields for tents. It wouldn't take much creativity to find housing for a while on them.

The roads are closed, the ports are destroyed, and the channels are probably not safe for ships. But the military has helicopters, transport planes, amphibious craft, light boats they can pilot into the swamps and canals and rivers, even into the streets.

The Commander in Chief doesn't even have to wait for paperwork. He doesn't even have to think of a plan himself. He can order the troops to go where he wants. The troops would love the chance to help. ANy action would be welcome. Anything but going to parties and cheesy photo ops.

This problem would not be nearly so bad if Bush and his administration would have responded.

I don't really know his political leanings, but I think he is one hell of a smart guy and I wish he was on a channel that was as neutral as possible. I don't know a lot about him. All I know is that he impressed me tonight. I love people who can talk quickly and make a lot of sense.

These reporters from all channels are seeing real horrors and I don't think any of them can keep up any political bias at this point.

I think all the reporters who have been intimately engaged with this story understand the real severity and desperation of the situation. I've watched Anderson getting more and more angry with the feds he's interviewed. There ain't no action happening.

her description of people being left on an overpass in desparate need to medical assistance came right after either FEMA or the US Sen from LA (the woman) was talking abt how much help was on the way on the Larry King show tonight.

Merserve was already in Baon Rouge, but had reported live from NO the night before and while they didn't show her face, I think she was crying describing what she saw.

Tonight, Anderson Cooper came on right after Hailey Barbour was implying that things were getting under control and he was practically screaming into his microphone that the people on the Missouri coast had no idea when help was coming, had heard from no one and were in desparate straits.
