Pictures of Gas Madness on Long Island (pic heavy)
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 01:09 AM by Bleachers7
The gas prices have taken off on Long Island. One station was at 2.99 when I went to work and 3.25 when I got back. Here are some pictures and a story. Feel free to use these pictures. Let me know if you have unlimited bandwidth.

This first station is one of the two cheap stations in the area. It's charging 2.79 for the cheap stuff. It was 2.59 at 10 in the morning. They claim that they ran out of gas and then got a shipment. This place had long lines day and night.

This Citgo is exactly accross the street and almost no one is there. They were charging 2.99.

This picture is from a gas station a half mile down (Newbridge and Merrick Rd). They ran out of gas around 7pm.

This is the "cheap" gas place. They are always one of the cheapest. I went in and asked why prices were so high. The guy said that they get the leftovers of what the big companies have. He said that there are no left overs so his prices are through the roof. He says that the big boys might be shutting him down this way by not giving him cheap gas.

Someone put in what they could afford.

This station was accross the street. They were charging $2.79. The lines were long. This is on Merrick Rd. @ Meadowbrook Pkwy.

These last two are from "Gas Sale." Yeah right. They ran out of regular. Better get used to it.

Gas Sale, :hurts:

4. Not a chance.
People view this as a temporary inconvenience, not a permanent thing.

Hell, even if prices STAY here, we'll just adjust. Sure, the lower rungs of the economic ladder will be hit harder, but most people will be able to live with it.

7. Then why are they waiting in lines and draining stations?
People didn't look like they were kidding around.

8. They aren't violent, they're looking to save money.
Ever see Best Buy at 9:00am when they're running a big sale?

People expect gas prices to increase over the next week. They're just trying to gas up now to save a little money.

9. I would be inclined to agree.
Except that my instincts tell me different. People are concerned.

11. I agree that they're concerned
I also think it takes a lot more than some concern to create a "Mad Max situation".

18. I didn't see that in the pictures
other than the first one, and I didn't see that in my neighborhood. Gas was 3.38 where I live today and there were no lines whatsoever. Maybe it hasn't sunk in in Michigan yet.. maybe we've become accustomed to the ever rising cost of fuel. But if it was anything.. it was a slow day at the pumps.

2. Tonight I stopped for gas in NJ. It was $2.69, and I asked for
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 01:13 AM by the dogfish
$20 worth.

The guy goes off taking care of other people and I watch as the f'ing pump goes right past $20 and up to $36. I keep yelling to the guy to stop the pump, I SAID TWENTY AND THAT'S ALL I HAVE, he keeps saying, "just a minute, I'm busy".

He comes back, I said what part of TWENTY and STOP THE PUMP don't you understand? He shrugs with a smile and says "sorry" and hands me a credit card slip for $36.

And if I wasn't aware that $2.69 is actually cheap right now compared to elsewhere, I would have made him siphon it (while the long line behind me kept getting longer out into the highway) or let me leave only paying the $20 I asked for.

it may be gas prices that brings him down. That doesn't say much about our society, but lately, what does?

5. If we had a president
he could order that the gas prices be capped at what they were before the storm. But of course, he will never do that.

14. If we had a REAL president..
There would be 20,000+ Guard troops on the scene with a full scale coordinated rescue attempt. A real president would have been on the scene on Monday, down on the street, giving hope to the people. A real president would have shown some real leadership like past great presidents.

But we've got Bush.

10. I'm starting out on a 7000 mile trip Monday
For work. I'll be on the road for 3 weeks. Half of the trip will be in a 24' diesel box truck and half will be in a one ton stretch cargo van. All of it back east. I sure hope the company credit card doesn't fail me and that I can actually find gas when I need it. I won't let myself get too low before filling up that's for sure.

This might be a very interesting trip. I"m thinking of posting the gas prices I see every day or so to give everyone an idea what's happening around the country.

17. Memories Of 1974 & 1979
Lots here weren't around in those "glory days"...well they're here again.

Get ready for spot shortages all over the country without any warning. You'll have gas one day, then none the next. Or, stations will only be open for a few hours a day until they run out. Forget about gas after 6pm or on the weekends...and if your station isn't pay first now, it will be soon...drive off are running rampant.

Reality is most of us need our cars to get to work, food and other essentials. Getting gas will now become a priority as I see this shortfall being a long-term mess. I've already alerted my kids not to let their tanks run below 1/4 empty (not full...empty)...or 1/2 full at the worst.

Thanks for the pics. I saw 3.35 a gallon on stations in suburban Chicago tonight and I suspect that will be common elsewhere in the next couple days. The price of gas has now risen 1.00 over the past year. Congrats to this wonderful regime in Washington and the fine job it continues to do. :sarcasm:

19. I remember those days well!
My dad had a part-time job at a gas station in addition to his full time regular job. He and mom each had a car, as did I. We could get up in the middle of the night and go fill up. I know, it seems like cheating, but before anyone flames me, my dad had conditions for this (and yes, by the way, we paid for the gas; we weren't stealing it, and his boss gave him the okay for us to do this). Anyway, I was in community college at the time, and dad said I had to take the bus there and back. I had to walk or take the bus to see friends whenever possible (fortunately, many of my friends lived nearby). Dad had to drive to his day job, but the gas station was close enough that he could walk to work there. Mom had to drive as she worked at a hospital, and unless she came up with a bad case of being dead, she was expected to be there. I drove my car to my job when I worked the night shift, especially on weekends, as I did not get off until midnight or after, and it was about 8 miles from home. Anyway, I could usually make a tank last close to a month -- lots of people figured out how to stretch their gas "ration".

23. Yep...My Greybeard Is Showing...LOL
When I got my license a gallon of LEADED was .33 a gallon. In the '74 crisis it went up to .50 cents (people were crying gouging then) and then up to $1.00 a gallon during the Iran crisis in early '79.

IIRC, I remember filling up in my Chicago suburban neighborhood for .95 a gallon in 2000. Now THOSE were the good old days.

Cheers...
