1. Holy crap...
Our gas out here in Kirkland, WA went up just $.20 today... nothing compared to the gouging out on the east coast...

Well, guess that Great Depression II is happening sooner than I thought! Lovely...

9. yup
Been paying this for years folks. Welcome to the real world You are simply joining the rest of us.

EXCEPT: most of ours goes in tax, which pay for my medical, school, free university and unemployment benefit. As it should be. 30% tax - 50% for the rich. Oh - and don't spend it on bombs and bullets!

"When do the protests start" - well Fu*k me - is it only gas prices that get you lot off your fat arses!

You Americans are sooooo selfish - and then some. Everyone at DU biches about the stolen election, the media, the state of the war. Truth is - I have yet to see one photo of a protest with more than 10,000 people in it.

Fact is...You are kidding yourselves that you care.

You are way too comfortable to bother with any serious mass action. Until I do see photos of the "people" taking mass civil action - I will reserve my sympathy. You get what you deserve.

BUT IF GAS PRICES ARE WHAT IT TAKES - THEN ROLL ON $20 DOLLARS A GALLON

BTW - I am horrified - and heartbroken at what is happening to New Orleans. My sympathies - and hopes go out to the people there.

10. If only WE had national health care and guaranteed pensions
and reliable, clean, safe, efficient, affordable mas transit, we too could afford to pay YOUR prices.. Do YOU pay $800 a month for healthcare premiums and then a $75 per prescription co-pay and a $25 office visit co-pay? My son had back surgery and even with his insurance he must pay $30 per rehab treatment and he has to go 3 times a week.

11. You have a public transportation system, and are a small island. We
do not (should, but do not) and are much more spread out geographically. It's not uncommon to have an hour's drive to work with NO practical public transport to take.

Also, your country is in Iraq, if I recall? I also recall American aid to the Tsunami. Think before generalizing and calling us selfish. Your own colonial history is too fresh for you to throw stones - and you joined ours in Iraq readily enough.

I am "British" - but left my country in disgust with its involvement with Iraq.

Where I live - there are huge distances - but good cheap bus transport everywhere. Car tax is HUGE. (Try 50% on the new price of a car!) You get what you pay for. Priorities my friend. The US blue and red - have simply ignored these issues. Now they are coming to bite you back.

I wish they did not. I do not want you guys in this shit. I am just pointing out that this slow-motion train wreck has been coming for decades. Wake the hell up America!

The majority of UK people were against the war. Over 1 million people protested on the streets of London. One weekend was not enough - since those in power do not want to listen to any democratic voice. Every week the shout should be made. "Not in our name!"

American Aid for the Tsumai was dwarfed by that from other countries around the world. Most US (& UK) aid comes with a proviso - that it be spent buying services from US (or UK) companies. Does the term "indian giver" mean anything? The whole world has let down the Tsumai hit areas. UN head of disaster relief says much of the money promised - has never appeared!

Britain's imperial past was nothing to be proud of. However - it was "normal" - imperial behaviour. Britain was wrong to act this way then. So is America now.

I did not mean to be nasty. Folks on the ground - all over the world - are decent people.

13. draft
If there's a military draft you will see massive action. That's what it will take.

Oh, and some states are about the size of a european country... Much greater travel distances thus the need for cheaper gas.

I do prefer to walk, bike, run, whatever to my destination, but then I'm a stud as well...

19. when the media does not cover protests--
and does not show any pictures of large protests whatsoever...it is hard for people to believe in them as a means of effecting any changes. Add to that the era of rounding up peaceful protestors for no justifiable reason. Our media is primarily a tool of corporate interests, brainwashing millions. Understand that.

You people from around the world need to appreciate the heroism of those Americans who ARE speaking out and protesting--even here on the net it is an act of courage. And you need to have some tolerance for the inaction of others who fear the tactics of this repressive regime so much that they cannot act. Who wants to believe their government is completely corrupt?--That is a tough realization.

And then there are others who are so beaten down by circumstances that "civil action" becomes a luxury. As posters here have pointed out, there are significant differences between the way Britain takes care of its citizens while America runs roughshod over its citizens.
This has never been more true than under the Bushbots. Until you have lived this nightmare, you may not understand why your blame is somewhat misplaced.

Of course there are those who have blindly supported the government, to their own detriment-- but your view is simplistic. Things are very bad over here with regard to civil rights and abuse of democratic principles. You need to get that.

20. Apologies
I have never lived under the Bushbots. I hope I never will.

My world view can always be informed - but I have been watching things for some time. I am informed as much as I can be. I take a real interest.

Every protest I have seen advertised - and reported on this board - has brought out at most a few hundred protesters.

That is my point.

Civil rights are never a luxury. This is bread and butter.

Just look at the G8 protests in Edinburgh. 100,000 plus. Much more of that is needed. Lots more. It is the only way to be heard - when all other channels are closed.

Who wants to believe the world is run by criminal monsters? Red pill/blue pill time? It is one of the things that folks on this board have been trying to every day in their own lives. Educate, inform , monitor the mafia. Never stop.

One thing to whisper dissent, another to stand up and be counted. At Edinburgh - the police took photos, arrested, and intimidated all those they could. Strength in numbers is all that stops them doing more...

I post here on DU - because it gives me hope to see so many reasoned, enlightened voices.

Sorry for seeming blaise - but what I said rings true also. If you guys are afraid to protest, to speak out....then I fear you have already lost - we have all lost. For what you have today - may well visit us tomorrow.

Your point is taken though marions ghost, but one mother in a ditch showed what is possible.....

24. and when that happened in Edinburgh...
did you read about it in the papers?
did it make the international news?
were people around the country talking about it?

IF SO, then realize how it feels to attend large protests with NONE of the above occurring, because of the media silence.
-------------
As for Cindy Sheehan's publicity...most likely that story was gaining such ground outside the mainstream media they were pressured to respond. Also had all the elements of emotionalism and high drama that the American media depends on. For once, at least, they did report the story.

21. Well, you're not looking at the right protest photos
I marched in San Francisco on 4 occasions. On 2 of these occasions, there were AT LEAST 1/2 million people in attendance. And there were similar numbers in Washington DC simultaneously.

I certainly hope you didn't make the foolish mistake of believing cnn or other mainstream media outlets that claimed only "several thousand".

Also, it's hard to give much of a fuck about who you reserve sympathy for and who you don't reserve it for. And this is a shame, because you have some good points about the complacency of the US, but you painted with too broad a brush, and that pisses me off.

22. Ok enough - I stand corrected
Difficult not to use a broad brush - not yet enough practice. In time perhaps I will master this posting lark. Conversations allow for so much more inflection.

Don't get too pissed.

Never seen the pics you mentioned. Just dissappointed by what I have seen. Convers with the petition at the Whitehouse was the last. No too many there - unbelievable really - given the issue.

I guess the same can be said in my own homeland. Lots of people seem to be caught in a waking nightmare. Impotent rage - and arrogant complicit media. Nothing like on the scale you guys have to face though.

The point is still valid however. If all else fails - the streets are the only way forward. Peaceful and large scale Civil Protests have always been - and remain....the only way to get things moving.

23. Thanks.
It was very frustrating then, during the marches in the lead-up to the war, to be marginalized by mainstream news, and to be called a "focus group" by George W Humanrightsabuser.

There are far too many sedated people in the US, without clue. But there are those of us who are cognizant and try our damndest to make something break our way.
