4. There is a whole yard of City and School Buses in New Orleans East
Unfortunately they are under water.

Nobody thought they might come in handy, I guess.

Damn.

21. If they'd been used to evacuate the poor and carless...
They'd be out of town and still functional. Why weren't they? It was a mandatory evacuation.

25. I don't know. New Orleans bus system worked great. Plenty of vehicles.
I rode the bus in N.O. exclusively for 4 of the 6 years I lived there.

If you look at the aerial footage of New Orleans East, you can see the bus yard clear as day with scores of city and public school buses there.

26. I asked the same question earlier
can you imagine how much the impact would have been lessened if someone had just split up the number of available school buses and gone to the poor neighborhoods BEFORE Katrina hit? And if they had done that, how many of the "well, I'll just ride it out" crowd might have taken the evac orders to heart?

That's all I could think of when I saw an aerial shot of a lot chock full of bright yellow schoolbuses flooded to the roofs.

7. I think it means the folks in the Superdome can't take anymore.
There's what, 20,000 people in there? Stale air, no water, no place to shit or piss, no food.

I think the only thing that's preventing a riot is that they are exhaused.

But when people start dying in there, the panic could be deadly.

27. I am in Houston listening to my scanner and the police were just told to
on the watch for two school buses from NO and stop them to check the drivers because them might be driven by 15 year olds.

On the radio (police band) they're calling it a "crisis" at the Dome now.

9. I thought that they had *some* buses
If so, what is there plan? Are they going to wait until they have enough buses for everyone before they allow anyone to leave?
