Trapped in an Arena of Suffering
Trapped in an Arena of Suffering

snip

We pee on the floor. We are like animals," said Taffany Smith, 25, as she cradled her 3-week-old son, Terry. In her right hand she carried a half-full bottle of formula provided by rescuers. Baby supplies are running low; one mother said she was given two diapers and told to scrape them off when they got dirty and use them again.

At least two people, including a child, have been raped. At least three people have died, including one man who jumped 50 feet to his death, saying he had nothing left to live for.

while Bush cut his vacation short. The contrast makes me livid.

Anyone who again posts that these people were provided shelter and should be grateful as has been posted so much the past few days needs an anal cranial inversion.

It must be hell in there. No wonder some people don't want to go to the astrodome. I'm just stunned that they can't provide more security.

I can't imagine... I just can't imagine.

The story of the young violinist is beautiful, and heartbreaking.

They should have something."

What a beautiful story.

14. Bless that man's heart
The whole story was heartbreaking (and pissed me off for the most part), but when I read about the guy playing his violin for the others, oh god, that was so incredibly sweet.

11. Who the fuck rapes a child?
I havent spewed this much obscenity in years combined.

But Im fresh out of words.

I do not comprehend who rapes a child... EVER.. But right now, in the freaking SuperDome, where people were supposed to be safe?

All I know is that I am far more blessed then I have any right to be.. we all are.

And we should all be on our knees thanking whatever we believe in, even if its just blind luck... that we arent in the devasting wake of Katrina.

12. Pedophiles who get into shelters!
I had to point that out to the more bleeding of our hearts here, who feel the laws in FL designed to keep such scum out of shelters are too harsh.

Submitted for your perusal. A child is raped in a hurricane shelter. That is all.

17. Refugee camps?
Concentration camps... Jewish ghettos... So this is how Homeland Security envisions its response to tragedies. Get all the white and wealthy out, and then round up the poor and less fortunate and wall them off to suffer and die.

I'm far more fearful of this occupation governments killing me off than I am of being killed by a terrorist attack.

21. and to think some folks actually claimed people should be grateful
the Dome was open to them.

Is it any wonder that many who could not get out decided not to go to the Dome?

and 500 NG was the best our government could do? 2 bottles of water and 2 mres?

and Bush dares tell these people, with his full belly and safe surroundings, that America will be stronger for their suffering?

23. I thought that statement
was the most offensive. I held my tongue, because my children were in the room. But my 11-year old asked me, "How come he seems to be grinning about this?"

I saw a man on tv who had tried to save his wife. She told him that he was not strong enough, and that he should save himself. I wish I had the film of that man telling his tragic story, and could put it opposite the president saying that he'll be stronger for it.

24. The video (you mention) is somewhere on DU
I can't remember the thread exactly, I'm sorry. There's been so much sorrow and heartbreak.

Bush followed that comment with another display of callousness. He said , basically, those questioning the (lack of) planning are just playing politics. It's never his fault. It's never his mistakes. He's never in the wrong about anything. It's always, always, other people playing politics.

22. And they're going to be sent to another "dome"
I hope they'll have something more than two bottles of water and two MREs a day.

I can't imagine someone telling a mother to scrape out a diaper and use it again.
